Mr. Tedd Fredd is a good buddy of mine. He asked me, Jeremiah, don’t you and your kind ever rest from working in the hot sun? You are always gathering food for the village. You guys are not lazybones, are you?

On many occasions, Mr. Tedd Fredd would leave a large heap of grain outside our home for easy collection. He also, many times at night, left juicy leaves at my cousins ‘—the leaf cutter ants’—village entrance. He is a wonderful bat being who loves to help make life easy for others whenever he can. Everyone in our village loves him. He works hard at doing good, and he never says no to a challenge. He’s a real pioneer and a lovable bat being.

Mr. Tedd Fredd, I am a quicker learner than you are. My dad said that I’m going to be greater than you. I am more dedicated than you; I’ve already spent hours, at times, watching the flowers grow. My little brother, Shifty, is destined for greatness, too; he’s the biggest sneak ever, and my dad is not always very pleased with him. I think you are an inspiration to us in the way you go all-out in doing the things you do.

One thing more: one day last week, my dad asked me, Brain, what is the sum total of eight plus seven?

In a flash I said, Sixteen.

My dad said, You’re such a scholar, I don’t even know the answer. Very soon, you’ll be living in a human village. This is thanks to you, Mr. Tedd Fredd; you are such a good role model.

    Acknowledgments

I, Mr. Tedd Fredd, acknowledge you readers for taking the time to read my book. I acknowledge all the beings who have done me wrong. I also acknowledge those who were good to me, like David Searle who prevented his wife from sending damaging statements about me to the publisher. I also acknowledge Paula Whitely, who greatly encouraged my writing this book and who typed the manuscript.

I thank you for teaching me that throughout the bad times and throughout the good times I can still evolve into a better bat being.

    Ever the same,

    Tedd Fredd

    CHAPTER 1

    Mr. Tedd Fredd, the Pioneer

Mr. Tedd Fredd was a handsome and unusual bat being. He was smarter than all the other bat beings in his part of the world. He loved being on his own, as it helped him to meditate in silence, he said.

He lived in a town called Green Woods, but that was not where he was born. Tedd was born in a cave about fifty miles away, in a place called Phew. In Phew, the bat villagers rarely received human visitors, but when they did, they were usually the same ones. Young Tedd liked having them there. He liked hearing them discuss things about their life and work. Tedd thought, These humans are so friendly and understanding. They embrace life, even the life of bat beings. Each time they come, they camp out for days and nights and study us. They want to know more about us, like how we spend our nights, how we spend our days, how we care for our young, what role the old play in the family, and so on. They never try to harm us. I trust them and I like them, too.

The only thing that puzzled Tedd about the humans
