    Chapter 1

    The Lesson

Alex was excited to begin her magic training again; she still remembered how she felt when she had put up a shield to save herself and Colt. It had been two weeks since they returned from the World of Paradise. Colt was finally healed and ready to begin training her again. Alex had woken up early and now was practically running to Colt's room. She knocked on the door and waited for a response. Seconds passed, and Alex was raising her fist to knock again when he opened the door.

Is it morning already? Sleepy Colt asked.

Uh, the sun isn't totally out yet, but it‘s definitely morning, replied Alex as she fidgeted in excitement.

Give me a few minutes; I'll meet you downstairs, Colt said as he retreated back into his room.

When back inside his room, he became worried as to how he would get out of training Alex. He had been putting her off for days with excuses that he was still recovering, but it was already two weeks, and he couldn't keep up the act.

Before she knocked on his door, he had been having the dream of him being back in the spirit realm, and the guardian gave him the choice of his magic or ability to walk. He had been having that dream since they returned from the World of Paradise. Most times, he dreaded sleeping as he hated that dream. He couldn't make any more excuses, or Alex would know something was up.

He had been thinking of how to tell them, but he just couldn't seem to find the right time. Colt fell back on the bed, releasing a shout of frustration, but he knew it wouldn't solve anything. The issue of him not having powers had been giving him sleepless nights. He felt useless as a member of the group without his powers. He was nothing more than an ordinary person. And he wanted to pull his weight among the others. He had no idea how long he stayed in bed before he eventually got up to prepare for the day.

Alex was skeptical about going to wait for Colt downstairs, but before she could protest, he had closed the door on her. She sensed he wasn't half as happy to train as she was. Then again, she knew she had disturbed his sleep, so that might be why he wasn't so enthusiastic about training. Alex reluctantly turned to go wait for Colt downstairs. As she was about to leave, Romeo came out of his room. He had been disturbed by Alex's knock on Colt's door. He followed her downstairs as he was already dressed for the day.

Alex kept pacing in the dining hall as she waited for Colt to come down, How are you still this excited about training? he asked her.

    What do you mean?

I saw you fight the Witch. You seem strong enough, Romeo sought to convince her not to pressure Colt, as he knew that Colt had lost his powers.

I don't think I am. I believe Colt still has more to teach me. Alex pouted.

Romeo knew when she made that face that there was no convincing her otherwise, so he sat there silently as she continued to pace about.

Soon after, they were joined by Ralph and Steve, but still no Colt. Alex was starting to get more angry than impatient. She was already fuming about going up to Colt's room a second time when Colt appeared in the hall.

He looked tired, but not from lack of sleep. Alex's anger quelled as soon as she saw his face. She became concerned about his well-being.

You don't look like you got much sleep. Are you okay? Steve asked as Colt took a seat.

    Yeah, I'm good, Colt answered.

Steve wanted to press further as it was obvious Colt wasn't looking well. He had noticed it ever since they got back from the World of Paradise, but he didn't want to intrude on whatever thoughts Colt had going on in his head.

They all sat down to eat breakfast. Alex, in her excitement, voraciously ate as she was trying to stock up on her energy. On the other hand, Colt had a little appetite as he dreaded what awaited him during Alex’s training. He ate as slow as possible, holding off the inevitable, hoping against hope that Alex would let him off the hook.

No such luck. After they were done eating, Alex and Colt went outside to train.

I was hoping you could shoot some fireballs at me while I tried to put up a shield, Alex said as soon as they were at their training ground.

That is quite dangerous. How about I throw a rock at you instead, and you try to put up the shield. Colt suggested.

Oh, that seems like a better idea. Wouldn't want to injure myself while training. Alex laughed.

Colt didn't need to be told she was in high spirits. If he had his magic, he would have shot a fireball at her, as he was certain she would deflect it with her shield. He picked up a rock and told her to get ready, Alex took a stance, and he gently threw it at her. The stone hit her on the shoulder. She had failed to put up the shield.

Let's try again. I don't think I was prepared for that.

Colt took another rock and threw it at her, and it still hit her. After several tries, Alex's enthusiasm was starting to die down as she kept failing to stop the stones before they got to her. But she didn't let that stop her. She kept asking for more tries, and Colt, knowing he couldn't do so much at that time, kept throwing them.

If I feel threatened, I'll be able to make it happen. How about we try with a fireball instead?

I can't throw a fireball at you when you haven't been able to deflect a simple stone. I don't want to hurt you, Colt defended.

I know I can do it. I just need you to trust me, Alex pleaded.

What was going through your mind when you put up the shield for the first time?

I just knew I had to save both of us. That's why I am asking you to throw a fireball at me.

What happens when you don't deflect it?

Alex thought about the dangers of what a fireball would do to her. I-I just know I'd stop it, she stuttered.

I can't put your life in danger based on what you believe. I'm sorry, Colt sighed. How about we try something else? He hoped another training might get Alex's mind off the shield.

You said I’ve learned everything else except shielding myself, Alex reminded Colt in exasperation.

They stood in silence as they both had conflicting interests. Alex was frustrated that Colt wouldn't shoot a fireball at her while Colt was thinking up excuses for why he couldn’t use fireballs. Colt was about to speak when Ralph came running toward them.
