    Chapter 1: Ender Dragon

Did you hear it too? Ralph asked Alex. He was pretty shaken up by the roar from the Ender Dragon. Romeo and Steve came to join Alex and Ralph; they had heard the dragon’s roar, too.

How many arrows have the blacksmiths finished? Alex asked.

Not enough, Ralph said, I was just with them, and they haven't gotten to half of the supposed quota. Worry was written on the faces of everyone.

Well, no time to waste, Alex said, trying to take charge of the current situation. Let's rush over to them and collect whatever little ammunition we can, she said as she ran past them, heading for the blacksmiths.

All the goldsmiths were working in a forge close to the palace; they had prepared a little over fifty diamond-tipped arrows and eighty exploding arrows.

This won't be enough, Romeo said, looking sad.

You're darn right it won’t be, but we can't just give up yet, Ralph said.

Grab as many exploding arrows as your hands can carry. We need to move them, Alex said.

No need for that. We need to get the archers here to take them, Steve said. Get me four of the best archers we currently have, he said to the palace guard that had been with them all throughout.

In a matter of minutes, the other soldiers arrived with him. They had their bows on their shoulders. They didn't look as big as the other soldiers. Ralph thought to himself but knew now wasn't the time to judge who is a perfect soldier. They were each given twenty exploding arrows.

Just then, a scout came in with a message for the king. Your Highness, I see just the Ender Dragon coming; no army is with her, he said.

All four of them looked perplexed—had the witch sent just the Ender Dragon to destroy the village?

Are you certain of this? Steve asked the scout.

Yes, your Highness, I looked around, and the Ender Dragon is all by herself, the scout said.

This must be our lucky day, Romeo said.

An Ender Dragon isn't so easy to deal with. We aren't out of the woods yet, Ralph said.

At least now we know we don't have to worry about the Witch, Alex said as they left the forge. The archers had already left after Steve told them where each of them was to position themselves to get a clear shot of the Ender Dragon.

The village was in a state of confusion. Everyone was scared that this would be the end of them. The Ender Dragon roared again; this time, it sounded much closer than the last. There was silence as the roar echoed in the air; a long roar sent chills down the spine of the villagers, after which they ran around looking for shelter.

Alex wished she knew enough spells to fight off the dragon; that way, she could have taken the fight to the Ender Dragon instead of having it come to the village and destroy all that they've built so far. She looked around her, the towers and shops the Ender Dragon would destroy on its arrival. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of wings flapping; slowly, the sound got closer. She could tell the dragon was really close by. Alex and Romeo were tasked with keeping the villagers safe, while Steve and Ralph would be fighting the Ender Dragon.

The head of the Ender Dragon was the first to appear before its large body. It landed in front of the village and gave a loud roar as if announcing its presence. Steve and Ralph, with the soldiers, were already stationed there waiting for it, fear written on the faces of everyone.

The dragon looked down on the battalion in front of it as if searching for someone or something. Steve wasn't going to wait for the dragon to make the first attack. Immediately, he threw a spear at the dragon. Just as he did, the soldiers followed his lead. The dragon roared as Steve's spear hit it on its left side. It was a diamond-tipped spear, so it pierced through the scales of the dragon. The dragon spat a ball of fire toward the soldiers in front of it, and they all dispersed in various directions.

Suddenly, an arrow came flying from one of the high towers. Immediately, it made contact with the Ender Dragon; it exploded, causing the dragon to roar and take a flight to the sky. It reached high enough and started to spit fireballs down on the buildings. Several arrows came flying from four different directions this time. Two of the arrows hit the Ender Dragon's right wing, causing it to lose altitude. It dropped on the metal gate, shattering its foundation. As the dragon was now on the ground, the metal soldiers kept throwing spears at it. It took about a minute and a half before the dragon regained its balance. It flew higher into the sky than it had previously gone. From there, it spat more fires down on Steve and his men. After causing some damage to the entrance of the village, the dragon flew into the city.

Steve, Ralph, and the few soldiers left and chased after it. We can't let it destroy the rest of the city. We have to do something about it, Ralph said as he got on a horse to chase after the dragon. Steve quickly grabbed a horse that had broken free from a nearby stable.

We are doing the best we can. We weren't prepared for this, and there wasn't enough time, Steve said while he got on the horse. In no time, they were already chasing after the dragon.

Shots of exploding arrows hit the dragon from all directions as it flew in the air, causing it to roar and spit fireballs everywhere, bringing down the houses and towers on impact.

Our archers seem to be doing a great job with those arrows, Ralph said, wishing one of the arrows would deal a heavy blow to the dragon.

Yes, they are. It would have been so much better if we had more of those. We would have rained down fire on the Ender Dragon, Steve said wistfully.

One of the fireballs hit the council hall, where some of the villagers were hiding, Alex and Romeo included, causing it to shake violently to its foundation. Out of fear, they came running out before the building collapsed on them. The dragon came flying down and landed on a building that collapsed as soon as the dragon stepped on it. The weight of the dragon was too much for that building. The Ender Dragon roared, making the villagers scream and run in a frenzy. The Ender Dragon flew back into the air and circled the scared villagers for a few seconds; then, in a flash, it swooped down, took someone, flew back into the sky, and headed back the way it came.

Did you see that? Ralph asked.

Yes, it seemed to have picked up something and is now leaving.
