    Chapter 1

Hurry up, Colt! Uncle Marty yelled up the stairs.

We’re almost ready! Colt hollered back.  It had been a big change moving out to Atlanta to live with an uncle he had never even known existed.  But, Colt had found a home there.  It wasn’t just that his uncle was rich and well connected to so many famous musicians.  Colt genuinely loved Uncle Marty.  He was nice and generous and funny.  Colt almost wanted to thank Barry for setting fire to his house back in Alabama.  If it wasn’t for that scare in his life, he never would’ve gotten the chance to meet and bond with his uncle...or Wes, for that matter.

Is my cap straight? Wesley asked Colt as he studied himself in the full-length mirror.

Colt scrutinized his best-friend’s cap and adjusted it slightly.  His hands shook as he did.  Colt was nervous.  It had been a long four years.  He was definitely excited to graduate high school and ready for the start of his adult life.  But, as excited as he was, he was also very nervous.  Everything was about to change and that change was scary.

Well, it’s about time, Colt’s mom smiled as he and Wesley made it downstairs to the foyer where Colt’s mom and step-dad were waiting with his uncle.  They had really become a family over the past six months.  Colt had convinced his mom and step-dad to come out for the Christmas holidays and by the end of their stay it was as if there had never even been a break in the relationship between brother and sister.

I know, I know, mom, Colt rolled his eyes as he gave his mom a soft hug.  Even though he had been away from home for a while, he remembered very well how often his mom had nagged and teased him about the time he took primping and getting ready every day.  Somehow, hearing it after living with his uncle for many months, it sounded less annoying and instead, endearing.  It reminded him of home.

As Colt’s family piled into his uncle’s car, Colt and Wesley took their seats in Colt’s Tahoe.  They pulled out first, followed by Colt’s mom, step-dad and uncle.

I hope my mom and Aunt make it in time, Wesley told Colt nervously as they pulled into the school’s parking lot.  His mom had promised she would get off work in time to see him receive his diploma, but she had a crappy boss and couldn’t afford to lose her job.

She’ll be here, Colt reassured him.  He felt bad for his friend and hoped he wouldn’t be made out to be a liar.  He did feel like Wesley was family, but he knew it wasn’t the same thing as having his actual family there to watch him receive his diploma.

As Colt and Wesley waited back stage with the rest of their graduating class, they couldn’t see the area where the families were to sit.  Because of that, Wesley wouldn’t know if his loved ones made it until he stepped out onto the stage.

The boys were lined up in alphabetical order as Principal Parrella started the ceremonies.  As the girl in front of Colt was called out to the stage, Colt looked back at Wesley and smiled.  This is it! Colt thought.

Colton Billingsly, Principal Parrella said into the microphone and Colt began walking.  He accepted the diploma as he and Principal Parrella shook hands.  Then, he moved his tassel to the other side of his cap before continuing on to his seat, the whole time hearing his family’s loud cheers.  As he exited the stage, he glanced around the crowd and saw no sign of Wesley’s mom or aunt.  He felt bad for his friend, but still secretly hoped they would show by the time Wesley’s name was announced.

He wanted to text his friend and wish him good luck, but knew Wesley might ask if Colt had spotted his mom yet.  So, he waited until just before Principal Parrella called Wes’ name.

Wesley McCord, Colt heard the principal call out a few minutes later.  He scanned the crowd once more, and didn’t see Wesley’s mom anywhere.

Just before Wesley emerged out onto the stage, though, Colt heard a familiar voice yell, Go Wesley!  He turned to where the voice came from and saw Wes’ mom and aunt standing way back behind all the seats.  He wasn’t sure if they had been there all along and just couldn’t get seats or if they had just arrived.  Either way, he was happy.

Wesley took the stage to receive his diploma and immediately looked for his mom.  When he spotted her and his aunt, a sense of relief passed over him.

Colt stood up and whistled loudly.  His mom, step-dad and uncle were also cheering loudly for Wesley, who smiled proudly as
