Chapter 1
Things had changed so much for Colt Billingsly between his junior and senior years in high school. Junior year, he was a star jock that most people thought was a dick. That’s when he met Adam, though. And, from that point on, everything in his life changed...drastically.
Can you believe school’s starting back up in two days?
Adam asked Colt as they lay in bed cuddled up together.
Yeah,
Colt’s smile faded. He wasn’t especially fond of school in the first place, but that wasn’t why he was sad. Adam had graduated school a few months earlier which meant that in two days Colt would be going back to school while Adam would be off starting a new life in college. As happy as he wanted to be for his boyfriend, he couldn’t help feeling sad...left behind, like it was the end of their relationship.
Hey,
Adam whispered as he kissed Colt’s forehead, it’s going to be fine.
Adam continued talking but Colt’s mind trailed off as he thought about how different school would be for him. He was used to being the star of the school...a hot shot that everyone wanted to be like. Things would be different. He was no longer dating the school’s prettiest girl...hell, he was no longer straight. Sure, he tried to tell himself, most people already knew about him and Adam but knowing he’d be all alone, without Adam, somehow made it harder to face. He was nervous... Why couldn’t the summer just last forever?
Adam and Colt spent the rest of the entire weekend together and, for the most part, Colt’s mind was taken off of his first day as a senior. It wasn’t until Sunday night when he felt the pit in his stomach once again reappear...growing with each passing minute.
Maybe I should skip tomorrow?
Colt suggested, citing his stomach pains as a reason.
You’re going to be fine,
Adam smiled. You will see...you’re going to hit the halls and once again feel the electricity that comes along with being the top dog at school.
I still won’t have you there,
Colt complained with a pout.
How about I drive you and pick you up?
Adam suggested. It wasn’t the best compromise but it did make Colt feel a little better.
That night, though, sleep eluded Colt. He tossed and turned...unable to shut of his worrisome mind. After a while he just stopped trying to sleep, instead focusing on watching Adam sleep beside him. There was something comforting about watching his boyfriend’s peaceful face. Adam’s chest rose and fell with each long breath he took and, as Colt watched, his eyes grew heavy. Before he knew it, he was finally asleep.
Wake up, Sunshine,
Adam sang as he nudged Colt’s shoulder.
What time is it?
Colt asked as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He looked around, noting that Adam was already dressed. Panic set in as he thought maybe he had overslept and was late. He didn’t care about being late for school. But, waking up late did mean that he would have less time to spend with Adam.
It’s okay,
Adam laughed as Colt attempted to jump out of bed. I just got up early so I could cook you breakfast...in bed,
Adam added with a smile.
It was then that Colt realized he had been smelling bacon and maple syrup since he had opened his eyes. As he relaxed, Adam placed a tray across his lap. It contained pecan waffles with syrup, a couple of slices of bacon, some scrambled eggs and a glass of orange juice.
Wow, you did all this for me?
Colt asked. He knew he had the best boyfriend in the world, but he was so touched that Adam cared for him so much.
Well, I figured you could feed some of it to me,
Adam answered with a sly grin as he stripped off his shirt and climbed back in bed with Colt.
After breakfast, the two young lovers made their way to the shower, where they took time washing and caressing each other in between kisses. As much as he wanted the moment to last forever, Adam reminded Colt that they had to get out and get dressed or they would be late for school.
Okay,
Colt reluctantly agreed before planting one last kiss on Adam’s lips.
On the ride to school, Adam could feel Colt’s anxiety returning so he reached over and placed his hand, palm side up, on Colt’s leg. Colt grabbed Adam’s hand and squeezed. It was slow, but he could feel himself calming.
You’re gonna do great, and I’m just a call away,
Adam reminded him as they pulled into the student parking lot.
It’s only eight hours, right?
Colt laughed nervously, trying to build up the confidence to say goodbye and exit the car.
I’ll be right here as the bell rings...ready to sweep you off your feet and back into bed,
Adam replied with a wink.
That a promise?!
Colt grinned.
Promise!
With that, Colt gave Adam’s hand a tight squeeze before leaning over and also giving him a kiss. Thank you,
he whispered in Adam’s ear. I love you.
Love you, too. Now, go get ‘em,
Adam replied. He thought for a second that he was going to have to push Colt out of
