    Chapter 1

Yeah, fuck you, Playa! Colt yelled jokingly to his buddy as they parted ways, each heading to their lockers before leaving campus.

Walter Colton Billingsly, better known as Colt to his friends and family, was sixteen, almost seventeen, and a Junior in high school.  He lived in a small town in Alabama and had everything going for him.  He had a passion for music, was Captain of the school’s basketball team, and had the hottest girlfriend and a souped-up truck.  To him, life couldn’t get much better than that.

Walking backwards down the Junior hallway, Brian, Colton’s best friend, yelled back, Yeah, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?

Brian was also on the basketball team and had a hot girlfriend, but he wasn’t nearly as popular as Colt.  Both boys could be dicks, but Colt’s looks inspired a lot of people to overlook his behavior.  Brian, on the other hand, was not as fortunate in the looks department and didn’t seem to get cut as many breaks as his friend.  He wasn’t bad looking, but he was very skinny and had a bit of an acne problem.

Rather than reply, Colt just held up his middle finger as he grinned ear to ear.  He’d never let anyone else get away with making a gay joke about him, but he and Brian were like brothers.  They had been best friends since freshmen year when they both tried out for the basketball team.

As he put his Literature book back in his locker and grabbed what he wanted to take home, Colt’s girlfriend, Heather, approached.  Hey, girl, Colt smiled as he pulled Heather forward for a kiss.

Heather was the school’s head cheerleader, but unlike most cheerleaders, she wasn’t obsessed with her looks.  Most of the time she wore very little makeup and kept her dark hair pulled back in a ponytail.  While she didn’t really care about beauty the way most girls did, everyone in the school knew she was still the most gorgeous girl there.  Because of her Latin heritage on her mother’s side, her skin was naturally tanned.  From her dad, she got a set of striking turquoise blue eyes.  As beautiful as she was, though, Colt was attracted to her because of her brain and athletic talent.

Though he didn’t publicize it, Colt had an IQ of 155.  He had done his time dating fast, easy girls who would put out without batting an eye.  As fun as those memories were to think about, Colt liked having a girlfriend that he could talk to...one that could hold her own in any conversation.  And that was Heather to a tee.

Am I still coming over later? Heather asked.

You’d better be! Colt exclaimed with a laugh and his signature wink as he closed his locker door with a bit too much force.  That wink was how he got his way more times than not.  No one could resist his steel blue eyes and his wink forced people to look into them and be hypnotized by them.  I got Brian coming over in an hour though, so...say, eightish?

Alright, Heather smiled and agreed before kissing Colt on the cheek and heading off for cheerleading practice.

Colt ran a couple of errands on the way home and barely threw his book bag on the bed and kicked his shoes across the room before he heard a pounding on the door.

Damnit, Brian! Colt yelled as he headed for the door.  He had told Brian to stop pounding on the door.  His mom and step-dad didn’t like it.  Fortunately for him, they weren’t home.  That’s probably why Brian felt it was alright to ignore Colt’s orders.  Still Colt wasn’t amused and planned on letting Brian know about it.

I told you....! Colt yelled as he swung the door open, but immediately stopped.  It wasn’t Brian at the door.  What do you want? he asked, not hiding the distain in his voice.

Is that the way you greet an old friend?

Standing before Colt was Barry, an old acquaintance of his.  Barry was three years older than Colt.  He was a thin, black guy that Colt had once upon a time been friends with.  When they were younger, they, along with a few other friends, had decided they were in a gang.  They didn’t really form a new gang, or even join an existing one.  They just kind-of said they were in a gang.  Mainly it consisted of trying to be gangsta-like with guns and selling drugs.

Colt was into it, but when he started high school and got into basketball, he felt he no longer needed it.  Around that same time, Barry had dropped out of school and increased his gang activity.

We’re not friends...not anymore, Colt answered in a monotonous voice.  He wanted to just slam the door in Barry’s face, but he could see the bulge of a gun tucked into Barry’s jeans and didn’t want to go overboard.  From the look of Barry’s bloodshot eyes, Colt assumed he had been using the drugs he was currently selling around town.  Drugs and guns weren’t a great combination.  They definitely weren’t one that Colt wanted around his house.

I just need you to help me out....for old time’s sake, Barry said.

I’m out of that life now, Barry, Colt tried to respectfully but firmly explain.  He wasn’t sure why, but he had been seeing Barry a lot lately.  And, he didn’t like it.  It made him nervous.  It’s okay, I’ll be right there! Colt yelled over his shoulder towards his living room.  He knew Barry would
