Introduction
Because failure isn't an option if success is just a matter of more effort. –W. Bruce Cameron
I watched as the man became easily frustrated. The yellow lab pup—she couldn’t have been more than three to four months old—looked up to him. Her brown eyes glistened with purpose and enthusiasm. Her little rump sat sideways in the grass, tail thumping and swishing. The man placed his head in his hands and sat down beside the pup. She couldn’t take her eyes off him, even with all the distractions surrounding them in the park. The pup sprang forward and nuzzled him with her wet nose. The man’s defeated face softened, his eyes brightened, and he took her in his arms and showed her love. One more time,
he asked. Sit. Please.
The little yellow ball of fur did as he asked, twitched her ears to attention and made him her only focus. The man shot up and hollered his congratulations. The pup did the same, raising her paws and panting at the man’s legs. His attitude changed the course of their training session. His happiness became the pup’s happiness. They were in this together.
Effort is a funny thing when it comes to dogs. It’s part patience, part dedication, but mostly love. It’s said that anything worthwhile in life doesn’t come easy. Training your own service dog doesn’t have to be that way, so I’m going to show you how. All you’ll need is a little patience and time balanced with plenty of love. As we embark on this journey, I’m going to ask you one important thing. Suspend belief in all you know or thought you knew about dog training. As you move through the steps in this book, you’re writing the story of you and your canine companion. Like any good story where the ending seems out of reach, you’ll need to put aside the things that are holding you back. Fear is the greatest impediment to progress. Together, we’ll extinguish the fears of dog training. Knowledge is fear’s greatest enemy, and the following chapters will fill you with the wisdom to train your dog to be a service companion. It will take time, but by the story's end, you and your dog will be filled with amazing memories and walking together into the world as partners.
By now, you’ve probably looked at many guides, listened to advice from friends and family, and watched plenty of movies about dog training. Like me when I first began working with dogs, you were probably filled with awe. How some dogs responded
