About the Author
Introduction: Your New Puppy and You
You’ve just gotten a new puppy. Congratulations! No doubt you want to learn everything you can about puppies so that you and your new little friend can build a great relationship together. I’m sure you will have a lot of questions. Among them is likely regarding the tricky topic of toilet training your puppy.
You Can Do It—And So Can Your Puppy!
Puppies are eager to bond with their new owners just as much as the owners want to bond with their new puppies. Working together towards good toilet habits can be part of that bonding experience. It will give you both a sense of accomplishment and help ensure that your new relationship is off to a good start.
One of the major reasons that puppies are abandoned or left at shelters is that the puppy soils indoors. That’s not the puppy’s fault—it just hasn’t been trained properly. You want to learn the proper way to train your puppy in order to prevent this unhappy scenario.
You may think that puppy toilet training is difficult. It doesn’t need to be if you endeavor to learn more about puppies and the principles of effective toilet training. By putting that knowledge to use, you can enjoy better, faster success than if you tried to manage puppy toilet training without it. This book is the guide you need to accomplish puppy toilet training with the maximum of success and the minimum of stress. Following these suggestions will lead to a happy, rewarding relationship with your puppy.
So, if you’re ready, let’s begin!
Chapter 1: Puppy in the House!
Above: Welcoming a new addition to the family. A lifetime of love.
You’ve invited a new puppy into your house to live with you. But what does that really mean? For one thing, it means that you now have to share your home with another creature that has its own needs, wants, and opinions. This affects not only you, it includes your family, who will also need to learn how to live with and care for a puppy. Then there are other factors to consider. For instance, you may already have an adult dog or other pets that might not appreciate having a newcomer encroaching on their territory and routine. No need to worry—there are several steps you can take to make this transition as easy as possible for everyone involved.
One of the first and most important things you’ll want to accomplish to help things go smoothly is toilet training your new puppy. Of course, you want to avoid the mess and smell that go with having an untrained puppy in your house. You also want that puppy to grow into a healthy, happy dog. Believe it or not, puppy toilet training is an important part of that process!
Adding a Puppy to the Family
Preparing for Arrival
Once you bring your new puppy home from the shelter, breeder, or pet store, that’s when the fun begins. Naturally, your puppy will want to run, jump, and play which is fun. But it will also do its business where you don’t want it to.
That’s because young puppies have not yet figured out the behaviors that humans want them to have. That takes time, a certain level of maturity, and practice. In other words, puppies have to learn to be trained. Fortunately, they have a natural desire to be hygienic. The idea is for you to present options that the puppy can use to guide its decision-making about where it is okay to go, and where it is not.
All of the people in your household need to learn about puppy toilet training, whether they are family, roommates, significant others, and including the person who may be taking care of your puppy when you need to be gone. So, in a manner of speaking, all the people in a puppy’s life need to be trained, too—to care for the puppy properly as well as help meet its toileting needs.
If you are fortunate enough to get a puppy from a breeder who has started the toilet training process, you may be able to move quickly past some of the earliest steps. If you have arranged for a dog-sitter or dog-walker, he or she may already be familiar with the basics. But for most people, the task of training a new puppy falls to the person who brought the puppy home. The more you understand about your new puppy, the more successful toilet training will be. It is important for you and your family to keep in mind
