Willowbrooke
Emily was a ten-year-old from Willowbrooke, Vermont with many talents. Singing was one of them, she just didn’t know everyone living and dead was listening. She could really carry a sweet tune. One chilly fall night she sang while braiding her hair. Suddenly there were noises in the kitchen, and she stopped. Her parents and grandma were asleep.
Not knowing what it was, she hopped into bed. Pots and pans could be heard banging and she locked the door. It got closer and she hid under the covers. Underneath them she could see a bright white light. The white light was a ghost! It had walked through the wall. Who’s there?
Emily reluctantly asked.
Terra Belinda,
the ghost responded, and Emily’s blanket flew from her bed. With her gray ghostly hair standing up, Terra the old bride of Frankenstein, floated by the closet. Emily noticed how her feet were not visible if she had any. You are able to talk to me. Most people cannot do that.
The child stared not knowing why either. Are you going to hurt me?
Emily asked.
No, do not worry.
Terra’s transparent body sparkled.
Is your grave here in Willowbrooke?
Emily asked.
No, it’s in Chicago. I just get tired of haunting the same place.
It’s okay if you want to talk, I just don’t want to see or hear my grandpa. He died the summer before last.
He was here watching and trying to communicate with your grandmother. But he left,
Terra said.
Oh good,
the child responded sitting on the edge of her bed.
The ghost sat in a chair for a while. Her stare frightened Emily and it soon flew through the ceiling to the attic. That was Emily’s chance to sleep. The next morning, she had to go to school. She couldn’t wait to tell her grandma what she saw. Grandma was very understanding.
Grandpa was trying to communicate with you,
Emily suddenly said when she walked into the kitchen that morning. Her mother was near putting away clean dishes.
I had a feeling he was trying. How did you know this?
she asked.
A ghost told me. She asked how come I could hear her,
Emily said curious herself.
Because I am a medium. And you also have the gift. It skipped your mother. There are things I do to bring the spirits when I want to talk to them. Do you want to learn those ways?
Yes, but I have school now.
She looked out the window for her school bus.
We can do it this weekend.
This ghost I talked to was from Chicago.
Maybe one day we can go and find her grave. As for now I want to visit grandpa’s grave and talk to him that way.
The coming weekend was full of teaching. Emily was to communicate with the dead.
