    It had all begun on the Halloween dress-up day at school. Everyone had dressed up this year. Even old Mrs Bridges, the art teacher, had made herself a cat mask.

    Emily was particularly pleased with her costume. She had found the old black dress in a cupboard in the attic. It had probably belonged to the woman who had lived in the house before Emily's mother had bought it. The dress was long, the sleeves dangled and nearly touched the floor and the hem was jagged. The bodice was beaded with jet beads, and when you looked more closely you could make out a design of stars and crescent moons. It was exactly the way Emily imagined a witch's dress to be.

    At lunchtime there had been broomstick races and every class had made a jack-a-lantern to put in a window of the classroom. After lunch everyone had assembled on the oval and paraded in their costumes. Emily's class had darkened the room and told spooky stories for the rest of the afternoon.

    After school, Emily rushed in the front door. 'Hi Mum,' she called.

    'In here, darling,' called her mother.

    Emily found her mother in the spare room she'd set up as a sewing room. Mrs Bowdon was a dressmaker and worked at home.
