    Crazies - Shelly Small

    Prologue

Lightning lit up the sky as a storm approached, in the distance thunder rumbled through the air. Amy’s grandfather picked her up from the library where she was finishing her research for an English paper due in a few days. He asked her how her day went and if she had gotten everything she needed done at the library.

Amy’s parents were traveling for their jobs, so she stayed with her grandparents. She loved the time she spent with them. When her parents were around, they didn’t pay much attention to her as they were always busy. With her grandparents, she knew she was loved. Her grandmother was teaching her to cook and she eagerly listened to the stories she would tell, talking about how they first met and fell in love.

As they approached the neighborhood where her grandparents lived, Amy noticed that the lights were out.

Grandpa, were the lights out when you left to come get me? Amy asked.

No, sweetie. Looks like it’s only a partial outage. Maybe we are not in the dark, he said.

The closer they drove towards the house, the more worried they both got. Something didn’t feel right. There was a heaviness in the air. A few blocks away from the house, Amy noticed her grandfather’s hands clench the steering wheel tighter until his knuckles turned white. Amy started to shake a little as she looked outside. She noticed that only the houses on the side of her grandparent’s house were dark.

    Grandpa…what’s going on?

I don’t know Amy, but don’t you worry, he parked next to a house a few down from his, I want you to stay here in the car, reaching into the back seat he grabbed a black blanket, while I go and see what is happening. Here is a blanket in case you get cold with the car off, he stated while he looked around the area.

Before he left the car he said, Remember to stay in the car, no matter what, until I come back for you. You understand, Amy?

Yes, grandpa. Please hurry and be careful, Amy said as tears slid down her cheeks.

Amy placed her head onto her backpack and closed her eyes saying a prayer that everything was okay. She heard the door close and the locks being enabled. Outside the storm was still raging on as the wind picked up. Lightning and thunder could still be heard from her spot in the car.

    BANG! BANG!

Was that gun shot that I heard or was it just the storm? Amy thought as she fought with herself to stay where she is in the locked car. Amy heard a voice say-get down on the floor and hide. Put the blanket over you and your backpack. Now! Hurry! Amy slipped down onto the floor of the car and tucked herself under the dashboard. She grabbed her backpack and set it on her legs, and covered herself with the blanket. Fear coursed through her. Amy didn’t know why she listened to the voice, but something about it made her listen. She tried to distract herself from what was going on outside as she made sure she stayed still so if anyone came looking inside the window, they wouldn’t be able to see her.

Amy started to hum to herself quietly. It was a melody her grandmother often sang when she was ill. Rain pelted against the car, making her startled. The blanket moved a fraction and she quickly replaced it over her head again. Without realizing it, Amy repeated the words, It’s just the rain.

She thought she heard her grandmothers voice say, Shh…be very still right now. Amy wasn’t sure why, but she listened to the voice. Her limbs started to tremble a little and that’s when the humming started. Not knowing where it was coming from but felt safe all of the sudden. Amy sat there listening to the humming and sat as still as she could.

A phone rang near the car had her heart stop beating. With the rain pelting the car, Amy couldn’t hear what was being said clearly just a few broken words here and there.

    I don’t know…friends’ house…not here…

The car moved back slightly as if someone outside hit it. Amy thought she heard someone scream and then footsteps running away from where she was. She took in slow deep breaths to calm herself down as much as she could.

She wasn’t sure how long it had been since her grandfather had left but it felt like it had been hours. The voice was back once again and a peace filled her that she hadn’t known before. I will be watching over you. Please take care and know how much you are loved. Remember this license plate DVL666.

A kiss was placed on her forehead. She knew no one else was in this car with her but she was sad for the loss of another presence with her. Amy heard the clicks as the car unlocked and panic filled her until she heard her grandfather’s voice.

Come on Amy. You need to hurry up and get to the house. I need you to call nine-one-one, he said.

She moved the blanket off her, throwing it into the backseat, grabbed her backpack and opened the door. Amy ran through the neighbors’ yards to get to her grandparent’s house. She didn’t see where her grandfather ran off to but heard the worry and fear in his words.

Amy flung open the door and ran to the first room that had a phone. She rounded the desk her grandfather worked at over the years and picked up the handle of the phone. Looking around her surroundings and tapped her foot on the floor waiting for someone to answer on the
