I’ve never gone to a bar alone before. As I approach the front entrance, I’m suddenly aware that the experience is likely to be very different from when I’ve gone out to bars with groups of friends, although I’m not sure how it’ll be different yet. I’ve never really paid much attention to the people that were sitting at the bar alone. I’m not sure how to act, what to do with myself. 

Today is my birthday and I just moved to this city a week ago for work. I know literally nobody. I’ve always gone out for my birthday, and I don’t want my lack of nearby friends to be the reason I stop that tradition. Staying home all by myself on my birthday would just make me feel pathetic. I know it’s not exactly safe for a young woman to go out drinking alone, but fuck it. Playing it safe has never been my style. 

I’m dressed to impress, like I always am when I go out. A little black dress, a pair of cute strappy heels, hair down, makeup done - but not too dramatic. I want to look good, but not so slutty that I attract unwanted attention. Which isn’t to say that some attention wouldn’t be nice. I broke up with my boyfriend when I moved. I wasn’t about to put in the effort to do the whole long distance thing, and we hadn’t been together long enough for him to move with me.
