    I haven’t been working here long.

    But I’m kind of starting to get the gist of what this place actually is.

    From the outside it looks like a seedy dive bar attached to the side of an even seedier motel. The kind where all the front doors lead to a cracked concrete parking lot that’s illuminated by harsh, blue overhead lighting. The kind where people put up towels in the windows because the cheap lace curtains don’t even do the bare minimum to cut out the harsh buzz of the street lamps. The kind of motel where the guests are actually residents who don’t check out and so it stays afloat with welfare money and dirty cash.

    Every town’s got one.

    Now, no one actually wants to be in a place like this. I know I sure never wanted to end up working here. I remember walking by this place as a kid on my way to school, dragging my pencil along the chain-link fence surrounding the scummy pool no one ever swims in. It kept me studying. I got good grades and I even went off to college. I’d see the women with their baby strollers leaning against the backs of cars, cigarettes hanging out of their mouths as they visited with each other in the parking lot and I would declare to myself I would never be one of them.
