    I hate it here, the boy said.

    Sssh, or they’ll hear you, Trina, his older sister, said.

    Downstairs, they could hear people in the living room, the sound of shattered glass, and something heavy as it fell over.

    The children didn’t make a sound as they hid under a desk in the attic. When the noises stopped, they didn’t move. When their knees grew sore and the air around them became hot, Traci swallowed her fears and said, I think they’re gone. Her voice shook and sounded smaller than her six-year-old frame.
