About this ebook

Things have gone from bad to worse ever since Violet Miller experienced her first transformation as a werewolf. Cut off from her family, friends, and the Exigency, she is forced to hide secrets from everyone she knows--until her spirit guide Fernando appears in her room, in physical form, in the middle of the day. Unless she does as he says, the coming tests could be too much for either of them.

Added to the mix is Violet's brother, recently returned from college with a new girlfriend who might know something about Midnight Valley's shady past.

    Chapter 1

My mom’s lips pinch together the way they do when she’s stressed, and she cranes her neck to cover a broad panorama of my bedroom: clutter, messes, and occasional patches of absolute clean. She’s trying not to look too disappointed at the sight, but her lips are turned down nonetheless. These, she says, candidly snatching my scarves from the back of a chair. Where do these go?

In my closet? I ask with a mild shrug. I didn’t realize I had so many scarves to begin with, but it’s been months since the topic of the cleanliness of my room has even come up.

The next few days will give me an unusual challenge at home. My brother Jordan is coming back from college for his fall break, and he’s bringing someone with him: his European girlfriend, Sol (pronounced sole like the bottom of your shoe—or like the human spirit). I’ve never met her. I’ve never heard of her, though they’ve been together for a while. Apparently she’s a social studies major who recently transferred to his school from Europe, and they started dating this fall. That means that she gets to share my bedroom for as long as she’s here, which means that today I’m spending alone with my mom, watching her fall apart as she scrambles to put things in line. If I had known ahead of time that I would be sharing my room, it wouldn’t have been this big of a deal.

My mom slides open my closet
