Introduction
Covenant is an agreement between two or more persons sealed by oath and blood. It is a binding agreement between two or more persons made with blood, and with an oath sworn between parties involved. There are always negative consequences when one party breaks the condition of the covenant.
Blood covenant is a deeper traditional, cultural and religious belief in which parties involve establish a binding agreement using rituals that involve blood. This practice, seen in different cultures and religions, is a method of creating stronger bond, and establishing binding trust and agreements. While some tradition involve mixing of the blood of the parties involve through incision, others can exchange blood in some other ways. These actions signify the joining of their lives and identities, and create a sacred unbreakable bond between them. Among the major method used in blood covenant is the shedding of blood through animal sacrifice. Shedding of blood is a deep level of commitment because the sacrifice is often made to spiritual powers. The following are some of the historical applications of Blood covenants:
Bond of Friendship: Blood covenants are used to form alliances between tribes, families or individuals; serving as a mutual pledge of support and protection.
Oath of agreement: Blood covenants are also used to seal agreements and promises; ranging from trade agreements to promises of mutual assistance in times of need.
Family Bond: Blood covenants are used to establish or strengthen family-like relationships; such blood relationship, though not biologically related is bound by the covenant.
Spiritual Bond: In most religion, blood covenants are used as part of rituals to establish relationship between humans and spiritual powers; with the conditions of blessings and protection.
In general because blood is a symbol of life, every covenant with blood is a sacred commitment for allegiance to share in each other's lives. This can be for protection, blessings and other reasons. Covenant as the bond that seals agreement and relationship between two or more persons, is a major strategy used right from the time of old to formalize agreement and seal relationships. It is an integral part of most traditions and religion as a means of consolidating and sealing relationship with its benefits. Blood covenants have been the key practice; however, the strongest covenant anyone can enter is with God, who is the creator and maker of all things.
The blood of Jesus shed for the remission of our sins represents His life; on the cross of Calvary, Jesus shed His blood to give us His life. And through the Spirit of life in the blood we experience His life giving power, which can save, heal, protect, deliver and cleanse us from all guilt and sin.
The covenant in the blood of Jesus is the gateway to eternal life and blessings of God. The covenant blessing in the blood is great and transcend beyond one generation. It is a blessing that is transferred from one generation to another according to the promise of God.
