    CHAPTER 1

    Atonement

All things are by the law purged with blood; and without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. (Hebrews 9:22)

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the Living God? And for this cause, he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is (proof, evidence—a legal document providing for the disposition of a person’s property after death, a will), there must also, of necessity, be the death of the testator. A testament comes to force only after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. In other words, he had to die to give us the right of inheritance. The inheritance is inclusive of the access to God for whatever is needed to bridge or bring together a relationship where I can come to him, commune with him about any and everything that may pose challenges, express my love—to spend time and share with each other how we feel toward each other. It was to reestablish a loving relationship.

Atonement means at one with. Jesus is the word and became flesh drenched in blood, atoning for you and I because of a love so deep, so real, that he emptied himself, bloody to bloodless. Then he took the cup and gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, drink from it all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for many for the remissions of sins for the pardoning, abating, and giving the perfect sacrifice. God’s Lamb slain, giving his life, paying ransom as the highest bidder, shedding
