About this ebook

How does it feel to be a fourth grader? Well, it's complicated. School is getting tougher, friendships are getting more complicated, and you're (almost) in the highest grade level at your school. Can one kid really handle all of that responsibility?!

Adventures of Diana Part III: On the Road is the third book in a series that takes you through the world of ten-year-old Diana through her own eyes. As a soon-to-be fifth grader, Diana reflects on some of the most memorable events of the past year—from the fun and whimsical to the challenging and scary. In her retelling of these events, Diana illustrates how facing her fears head-on helped her become a more responsible, thoughtful, and resilient young woman.

The author, Rachel Yang, is a ten-year-old girl who articulates her own life experiences by giving voice to the fictionalized Diana— a curious and confident kid who shares the ups and downs of her life as a pre-teen as well as the lessons she learns along the way.

Adventures of Diana - Rachel Yang

    One

    Graduation

Hello, my name is Diana, and I was in 4th grade.

I was nine years old, and my parents just called me to the couch to tell me something. Let’s see what they would like to tell me.

    I’m here, Mom, I said.

Good, replied Mom. Me and your dad want to tell you that your new teacher is Ms. Seagull.

She is the teacher we’ve expected, said Dad. She is also a writer; you will learn so much from her.

Well, she was sick the day we were visiting the different classrooms, I said. So I don’t know what she will be like when we meet her in class.

That’s alright. We know she will be a perfect fit teacher for you, said Dad.

I hope she will, I replied.

The next day, I woke up bright and early because I didn’t want to be late for my first day of a new school year, especially since it was the last year of lower school. Next year I would be in middle school.

After I’ve got myself ready, my dad drove me to school. At the school gate, I was greeted by some teachers and Ms. Door, our lower school director.

Ahhh, another fun day at school, I said to myself as I walked through the gate.

Turned out, the last year of lower school was one of the most fun years in lower school. Time flies like a bird in the sky, and before you know it, the school year was almost over.

Good morning class. Today I have an announcement to make, said Ms. Seagull when she walked into the classroom. Next week we will be having a graduation party because next year you will be going into middle school.

Ms. Seagull was a nice teacher. She had pale skin, orange hair and hazelnut brown eyes. She was wearing a jean jacket and a light lavender dress.

Great! I thought. I finally have a chance to wear my new dress.

    Next week …

Why are you in school concert dress? asked Katherine. I thought you said you are going to wear your new dress.

Well, I am. But my mom is going to bring it in later today - she doesn’t want me to get it dirty, I explained.

Later that day … (at lunch).

Mom! Finally! I was afraid you weren’t even going to come, I said as soon as I saw her.

Let’s get to the bathroom, and you can change there, she said hurriedly.

I brought this, she said as she pulled out a long black dress, as black as night. The dress also had jewels bright and sparkling like stars at night. They were put together to look like a flower growing on a long vine. She also brought a pair of matching high heels with the same jewels along the straps. They were polished so much that I could see my own reflection in them.

Can you do my hair so that it looks nice but it’s still down? I asked. I’m not sure if you know what I mean.

So you want something like this? asked Mom as she
