H i! My name is Lacey Moore, and I am going to tell you a story about me and my best friend, Sarah O’Steen. It started on a cold, windy afternoon in a town called Avalon, which is located in Georgia. Sarah and I were walking home from school, which is two blocks from where we live. We have been best friends since preschool. Now we’re in high school together.

We had to do a project for our history class. What should we do for our project? asked Sarah.

What about the white Victorian house that everybody is talking about? I asked.

    What about that house?

I heard a lot of people talking about it. I even heard it is haunted. They say if you listen real close, you can hear people yell for help, and if you look close enough, you can see shadows in the windows. Maybe we can find out its history and see who is haunting it—and why.

That would be a really good place.

So we headed toward the house. Let me call my mom so she will know where I am going to be. Sarah got out her phone and called her mom. My mom said it’s okay. If I want, I can go to your house and work on it tonight.

I asked to use her phone to call my mom. My mom said it is okay too. You are more than welcome to come over, I said as I handed the phone back to Sarah.

Let’s go through the cornfield. It will be a lot faster. I brushed my long black hair out of my face. We had to pass a small farmhouse to get to the cornfield. When we got to the field, we ran through it.

You look funny running with your short legs, said Sarah with a laugh.

What are you talking about? Your legs are shorter than mine! I responded, laughing too. At the end of the field, we noticed we had taken a wrong turn. Can you see which way to go? I asked.

No. I can’t see over the corn! said Sarah. We were lost. The wind started to blow, making whistling noises. A crow flew over our heads, cawing shrilly. One of the cornstalks touched the back of Sarah’s neck. She jumped and turned around to see what it was.

For a short girl, you really know how to jump. I laughed at her.

Where are we? asked Sarah. She continued looking around to make sure nothing else was going to touch her.

I don’t recognize any of this I said. But I know one thing—the whistling noise was louder, and we could hear the crow in the distance—I don’t like the sound of this.

When we finally got to the edge of the driveway that led to the house, I said, Look! There is somebody over there!

Where? There is nobody over there.

Yes, there is! I said pointing to the decrepit Victorian. We ran toward it; the white paint on its weathered siding was scratched and peeling, and the rickety porch was falling apart. The sight of the house gave me chills. At first glance, someone would think it was the house in House on Haunted Hill.

    Help! a voice yelled.

That’s coming from the house, I told Sarah.

Should we call somebody? asked Sarah. She pulled out her phone, only to see it was dead.

I don’t have mine, I said. It was taken away after our last progress report. My history grade was not so good. We ran toward the house.

I am not going up there. That house looks like a house out of a scary movie, Sarah said, hiding behind me.

Just think! If we go up there and ask questions and then go back to my house and do our report, it will bring up my grade, and I can get my phone back, I said. We walked up the steps.

Hello. Are you okay? Sarah asked in a low, soft voice. She didn’t want to be too loud because she didn’t know what or who was in there. The old
