Chapter 1
The rain pattered softly against the foggy London streets as Emma hurried down the sidewalk, clutching her coat tightly against the chill. She checked her watch again and quickened her pace, cursing under her breath. She was running late to meet Michael at their favorite restaurant, and she hated to keep him waiting.
Michael was the kindest, most thoughtful man she had ever known. They had met a year ago at a mutual friend's dinner party and had hit it of instantly. He was a professor of literature at the local university, and his passion for books was one of the things she loved most about him. He had an uncanny ability to perfectly recommend novels and poems that spoke to her soul.

Emma smiled, thinking of the bouquet of roses and new novel Michael had left on her doorstep just this morning. He was always doing thoughtful little things like that to brighten her day. She cherished the romance and thoughtfulness he brought to her life.
As Emma approached the restaurant, she paused to check her refection in the window, tucking a loose strand of chestnut hair back into her bun. She wanted to look perfect for him tonight. She and Michael had a special celebration planned, and she could hardly wait to see the expression on his face.
Taking a deep breath, Emma pulled open the door to the restaurant and stepped inside. The warm, inviting space was lit by fickering candles, with soft music playing. Emma scanned the intimate tables
