The Curly Hair Method For Curly Hair Care - Stephanie Quiñones
Introduction
Have you ever heard the saying nothing worth having comes easy
? I’ve had to tell myself this over and over while on my curly hair journey. This quote is especially true if you’re starting from the bottom, like me…literally. It was so hard for me in the beginning, especially seeing other girls’ end result
. Healthy, bouncy, shiny, voluminous curls do not, I repeat does not happen overnight and requires lots of patience. No patience is the number one reason why people have given up on the natural curly hair journey and I was almost one of them. My natural curly hair journey started back in 2011. My hair was relaxed, dried, thin and full of split ends. My hair would not grow past my shoulders. I would straighten my hair every morning before school. By doing so every morning, my hair and bathroom would smell like burnt hair but as long as my hair was straight it did not matter to me. I was so embarrassed that I would try to mask the smell with perfumes and lotions.
One day I noticed my hair was getting shorter and shorter. My hair was breaking off at the ends because of the dryness, heat from the iron, and relaxers put in my hair every 2-3 months. I started to do some research on natural hair and what it took to go completely natural. I was devastated. I could not see myself giving up relaxers, straightening iron, blow dryers, heat, and all the smell good
hair products that had all the bad chemicals that you’re supposed to avoid. Then I discovered the products I needed to basically bring my hair back to life. From shampoos, conditioners, deep conditioners, treatments, oils and the list goes on. I haven’t started my hair journey and I already quit in my head due to this list. But like I said in the beginning, it takes lots and lots of patience. So, from that day on I set my mind to it. I told myself this time next year I’m going to have curls like those girls on social media that I idolized. Boy was I wrong. Remember, patience! It didn’t take a year. It took about 5 years to completely transform my hair from weak brittle, dry damaged hair to soft, shiny bouncy, long healthy curls. It took me so long because I did not want to do the big chop, which is cutting off all the damaged hair, leaving only about a couple inches of hair. First, I let go of the relaxers and heat on my hair including straightening irons and blow dryers. Then, I started with the deep conditioners and treatments. As I was going through the ugly
stage of transitioning my hair I felt myself giving up again. How can I go out in public with two different textures of hair? My roots were starting to come out curly and my ends were straight from the relaxers and damage from the heat. So, I started to trim my hair every other month about half an inch to an inch to get rid of my damaged ends. Just by doing that I started to see my hair come back to life. After doing my hair for about a year and sticking to a routine, it started to get easier and did not seem so difficult anymore. It was actually starting to feel
