Flashes of Fright - D. T. Adams
1. LEVEL 25
Laurence was stoked. He had just completed Level 24 of his favourite video game, Jared the Mighty and the Forgotten Realm.
Damn, that was hard, he thought to himself. The game’s twenty-fourth level had proven quite the challenge. It had taken Laurence upwards of seven hours to finish it.
It was time for a break. While out on a walk, Laurence thought about all the trials and tribulations the game’s main character had been put through.
Poor Jared. For someone with ‘Mighty’ in his name, you’d think they’d make him less susceptible to threats. Thirty-seven times I died trying to complete that level!
As he made his way back home, he wondered what it would be like if a real person were to go through what Jared had been subjected to, repeatedly.
Falling down ditches, having savage animals attack him, being shot at by intruders, making his way through a crumbling house, traversing a hospitable desert and clambering down a slippery rock face were just some of the countless threatening scenarios Jared faced.
What if Jared was real? Well, I certainly wouldn’t like to be in his shoes!
When Laurence got home, he decided to take on Level 25, the game’s penultimate challenge. It was, naturally, more demanding than its predecessor.
Laurence got stuck in and developed the laser-like focus he needed to play games of this calibre.
He didn’t realise that someone had somehow given Jared the Mighty a human mind along with self-awareness. This video game character was now, unbeknownst to the human controlling him, fully aware of what was going on and what threats he faced. He was immortal in the sense that when he ‘died’ he just respawned, but he still dreaded dying just like any other human being did.
Jared the Mighty was facing a large pit filled with vicious venomous snakes.
Please, don’t make me fall.
Whoever was controlling Jared made him do a double jump straight over the pit and onto the other side.
Thank the heavens!
Before Jared stood a massive door of solid silver. Though he was of super-strength, he was incapable of moving this door. Fortunately, there was a workaround, namely the Key of Possibilities. It was a magical key that could transform itself to fit inside any lock. Jared, having collected the key earlier, was made to produce it from his pocket and place it in the door’s lock.
He did this fearlessly, though on the inside he was quivering with trepidation. This was because he knew exactly what was behind the door: Harrigan the Brutal, the game’s final and most powerful boss.
So far, Jared had defeated four bosses. The last one had been very tough indeed; Jared had died no fewer than forty-six times; levels with bosses at the end always took more lives.
Jared was made to step forward into the boss’s den. It was a huge dungeon that was damp, squalid and dingy. Jared knew that this boss had nine Hit Points and that his special ability added strength to all weapons he used, making them even more powerful and deadlier than usual.
Everything was out of Jared’s hands. He had no control over his body or his actions. The only thing he could control was his thoughts.
Whoever’s controlling me, concentrate and have your wits about you, for heaven’s sake!
There was nothing Jared could do. He was dreading what was coming. Experience had taught him that his controller was inept at taking on the game’s bosses.
Jared was forced to stand still as the boss, an overly large human/troll hybrid, made his entrance and exerted his dominion over his lowly opponent.
It was now time to fight.
Jared hoped for the best as he was made to rush forward, withdraw his sword and slash Harrigan across his chest. Harrigan had seen this attack coming and deflected it with a large, steel shield. Jared’s sword took a hit; it was now bent and useless. Harrigan ran forward, thrusting his shield and hitting Jared with it.
The blunt pain knocked Jared over. He felt weaker than before; he
