Acknowledgement
To Dear John, whose patience and help has made it possible for me to write this book; and to my grandchildren, who inspired me to write a children’s book in the hope that even at an early age, children are never too young to know that animals have feelings and they must always be treated kindly.
Part One
A New Life Begins
I am about to go on a journey that will change the only life I have ever known, forever. I have no choice, it is my destiny. The journey isn’t far but it’s very tiring. I would like to take a rest, only I am being pushed along, there seems to be a sense of urgency. I must keep going, but just when I think I can’t go any further the pushing stops, I gasp and gulp in a mouthful of air, I have arrived. My journey is over.
I am feeling very tired, all around me is darkness; I can’t see or hear anything. I am starting to feel very weak, my life seems to be ebbing away, I haven’t the strength to carry on.
As I start to drift away something nudges me, it makes me jump, it keeps on nudging. I am not scared though, in fact, I am finding it very comforting as it gently rubs me all over.
Although I can’t see or hear anything, my senses are telling me I need to drink. Gently, I am guided to an irresistible smell, instinct tells me to suck, which I do, with great enthusiasm. With every suck I take, I feel stronger, my body is starting to feel warmer and as I drift blissfully off to sleep, I feel very safe knowing I am not alone and something is looking after me.
The more I sleep and drink, the stronger I get. I have started to move around and sometimes I bump into other moving objects. Although I can’t see or hear, I find that each of them has distinct scents, so I am starting to recognise them individually when I bump into them.
Not only can I recognise their scents, I am also starting to get to know their characters. Two of them, push me quite strongly out of their way when they are trying to get a drink; I remember their scents and I always try to keep well away when they are around. The other two moving objects are not quite so rough, but I still haven’t the strength to stand my ground. However, there is another scent that always seems to surround me. I like the smell of this scent, I find it comforting, as it’s always at its strongest when it is helping me, I think it must be my guardian angel.
I am starting to find my way around more easily now, there is always a lot of pushing and shoving when the other moving objects want to drink, but if I wait my turn I never miss out, and if needed, my guardian angel is always around to help me.
It’s quite strange this little world I live in, I don’t know why it’s always so dark and quiet. I have to rely on my nose to help me find my way around, so I am getting quite used to living in the dark.
But what’s this! It’s no longer dark, I can see some odd shapes, they are blurry but they are moving, and what’s that! Funny sounds are coming from the blurry shapes. I don’t know whether to be frightened or happy, I don’t know what’s happening to me.
Help!
Something is gripping the back of my neck and it’s lifting me up, where am I going? I quickly close my eyes and it is all dark again. It feels good to be back in the dark, it’s where I feel safe. Gently, I am placed back on the ground. Before I know it, my eyes open and I can see that I am amongst the blurry shapes, but they don’t look quite so blurry close up, in fact, I feel very comfortable being amongst them.
It’s starting to dawn on me that these blurry shapes must be the moving objects I used to bump into. Although they all have different scents, I am able to recognise each and every one of them. I know which ones used to push me around and which ones were gentler with me. So, although they all look similar, I know from their scents, who to avoid when it’s time for a drink.
Where is my guardian angel? I can smell the lovely scent but I can’t see anything. I start to look all around, but to no avail, then I get the urge to look
