    Chapter 1

No, no, nooo. Not mine too, Ayesha Dean cried as she rifled through her school locker at the back of her homeroom. Students’ belongings had been going missing from the Year Eight students’ lockers over the past few days. The teachers had warned everyone to buy padlocks since the lockers didn’t have their own built in, but nobody was doing that unless stuff had been stolen from them.

Ayesha went through her locker again. Maybe she’d missed it. She checked the spine of every book arranged neatly at the back of her locker. Geography, maths, history… not there. She swiped her arm across the top shelf where she usually stored her school bag. Not there either. This is stupid, Ayesha thought. Here she was with her expensive new textbook for Indonesian class, missing only one day after she’d brought it to school. Could someone have thought I was an easy target? she wondered. Could someone have targeted me because I’m the only hijabi in the entire school? Ayesha
