Today’s Society Fails Us
What do you want to be when you grow up?
It’s an innocent question with harsh implications, setting the tone for our 21st-century culture. Since we’re little children we’re conditioned to choose a purpose for our entire lives.
Living only a hundred years ago it would seem logical. You either worked in a factory, your family’s business, or any other physical labor like being a shoemaker. And once you’ve started you were doing it until you reached your retirement years.
But It’s not the world we live in anymore.
With the internet at our fingertips providing an abundance of information, you can become anything and everything you want. However, the question remains unchanged, still implying the old times. We’re still expected to answer this question singularly.
Who’s to say a kid can’t become an astronaut who is a doctor but also cooks out of joy? A kid answering the question would only have to pick one of these three when in reality, we can be all of these things.
The question must be reframed to fit our modern times.
What do you want to do when you grow up?
Asking a question reformed in this way activates children’s strongest gift. This gift degrades as we go through life until it’s diminished into nothing. Only a few are fortunate or skillful enough to carry it with them to adulthood.
This gift is imagination.
It’s the precursor for action because it sparks a thought. It is this thought that swims in our mind that births the curiosity to make it true. By giving children all the options they want and telling them it’s okay to be a lot of things as long as they are satisfied, we’ll be on to a good start.
It is this mindset that will guide this entire book; doing what we want to remain satisfied.
Our lives are not set with a single purpose. We can pursue and do many things throughout our entire lifetimes. Instead of thinking about a career think about careers. Instead of thinking about one path, think of many.
If you’re reading this you probably got interested in the term multi-creative. It’s a term barely used in today’s modern society because we barely see people with this trait. There are famous people we all know living that kind of life, but nobody ever talks about it.
Take Arnold Schwarzenegger for example. He was Mr. Olympia seven times in a row, a successful movie star, a governor, and an author. The Rock had a WWE career before transitioning into acting. And there are many more examples but it goes to show that the only barrier stopping you is your mind.
