    About The Author

    Chapter 1

BOOKS TELL MANY LIES, but bad boy books build a mountain of it. Zhuri sits on her bed and opens the page of Day and Night, a vampire romance novel her roommate, Aditi, has been gloating about.

Though it's not Zhuri's type of story, she has trusted Aditi. Trusting her seems more and more to be a mistake as Zhuri scans through pages. After five hours of torture she finally reaches the climax where the lead character, Cavery, leaves her sane father for Eisa, a blood thirsty vampire.

This is trash. Zhuri slams the book onto her white mattress and stares at Aditi on the other side of the room.

Closing the novel in her hands, Aditi crosses her legs. The gleam of the sun glints on her yellow skin as she leans forward. What?

Despite the urge to throw the book away from the first chapter, Zhuri has been reading it only because her roommate said it's amazing. Her hazel eyes open wide as she holds Day and Night up. This, she says.

A few ebony strands of her hair enter her open mouth as her jaw agapes. Shaking her head, she pushes them behind her shoulder and focuses on the queen of liking the worst things, Aditi. Zhuri moves the novel in her roommate's direction. You said it was good.

So. Aditi shrugs. Is it not?

No, Zhuri spats. She has wasted hours of her life reading something she hates, and it isn't even for exams. Instead of this, she should have spent her time studying for the next semester. At least that would have been more fruitful, and more interesting than this garbage. Blood rises up her cheeks as she glances at the dark cover again. This is the worst piece of literature I've ever read. And that is, if it's even considered literature.

Aditi chuckles, showing her perfect set of teeth. It's the best seller. People wouldn't have bought it if it was not good.

Getting out of her bed, Zhuri tugs her denim jacket. She has always hated Aditi's logic because she's so wrong all the time. She marches towards Aditi and cocks her head. You know what else is the best seller?

    Aditi squints. What?

Zhuri throws the book gently on her bed and leans close to her round face. Toilet paper. And do you know why people use it?

Zhuri! Aditi gasps and pulls Day and Night close to her chest. It's not that bad.

Yes it is. Zhuri rolls her eyes and stands straight. Just because something is famous doesn't mean it's good. She moves towards the window, gazing at the white library on the other side of the road. I could have spent my time reading something useful, she says, and looks back at her roommate, or interesting.

The creaks of the ceiling fan fills the room as Aditi's face turn red. What is it that you don't like?

It is hard to believe Aditi is even asking that question. Then again, this is Zhuri's hopeless romantic friend who wants nothing but love. A psychotic, over possessive boyfriend who isn't even human. A stupid, bland girl with no personality, who is somehow smitten by someone who has even less personality than her.

She places her hands on her waist. "I didn't know it was possible to have less personality than a wet sock, but it is possible in this stupid story. The only people in the entire book who had some brain cells were Cavery's parents, and they were portrayed as cruel and controlling. In reality, they are the only ones who can see Eisa for what he is, a monster."

Spreading her hands, she looks down at Aditi. Though this should be a good explanation for any normal person, Aditi is far from normal. Her weird obsession with creepy guys is sometimes scary. Zhuri's breaths turn heavy as she tries to control her rage. Do you want me to continue?

No, that will be all. Aditi's baby pink t-shirt crinkles as she crawls back in her bed and rests her back on the wall. Placing Day and Night to the side, she picks up another bad boy novel she has been reading since morning. If I let you continue, you'll take up the entire day.

Lecturing Aditi to use her brain has never worked, nor has it stopped Zhuri from cringing on her choices. Zhuri crosses her arms. You are reading another possessive boyfriend trash book, aren't you?

Aditi tsks and lifts her narrow chin up. Will you stop judging me?

    It's hard not to.

Aditi's lips part and her nose crinkles.

In twenty years of her existence, Zhuri has never met someone as beautiful as Aditi, yet when in anger, she looks like a little demon. Little, but dangerous. Taking a step back, Zhuri sits back in her bed. But I can try.

Good. Aditi focuses back on her novel.

It's odd how someone as tiny as her can be intimidating. Trying not to utter another word, Zhuri looks around the room. Her eyes land on the cupboard next to Aditi's bed. Through the open door, it reveals the stacks of bad boy romance books she possesses.

By the sight of it, Zhuri's eyes almost pop out from her socket . Her jaw drops as she turns her head back at her roommate, who is staring at her.

    What? Aditi shrugs.

You have been harbouring that much garbage? Zhuri leans forward, checking the cupboard further.

You know what, Aditi says, and closes the book. Without finishing her sentence, she springs out of her bed and trudges towards the cupboard and slams it shut. You are being extra annoying today. I'm leaving.

Wait. Zhuri jumps to the floor. Though it sounds like that, her intention isn't to hurt her friend. After all, it's Aditi's birthday today, and she wants her in the room for the party.

Standing at the door, Aditi faces her. What now?

Despite her red face, Zhuri can see her roommate has left her novel on the bed, and she cannot let go of the opportunity to tease her. She points at the book. You forgot your trash.

Aditi's nostrils flare as she forms a fist and darts towards Zhuri. Screaming Zhuri runs around, trying to stay away from her as much as she can, but this room can barely fit their furniture let alone allow them to play.

You are the worst! Aditi shouts and chases after her.

Giggling, Zhuri jumps on the bed. No, your books are the worst. They don't make any sense.

Aditi hops in front of her. You think you can do a better job.

It's an odd question with an obvious answer. Zhuri chuckles. Of course, I can.

Do it then. Aditi's neck tightens as she points at the books behind Zhuri. Go on, write a better story than that. Make them make 'sense'.

Maybe Zhuri has annoyed Aditi more than she does everyday, else Aditi won't be talking so illogically. She glances back and forth between the novels and her roommate. They are already published. How can I change that?

Get inside the book and change it. Aditi steps closer to her.

The reason for her nonsensical talk has to be this pile of novels. Zhuri sighs. Adi, people cannot enter a book. She grabs her shoulders. It can happen in stories only. Sweety, this is real life. We are not that lucky or unlucky, depending on the novel.

I want you to get inside these books. Aditi's round nose turns peach.

Zhuri can't help but laugh at her silly talk. Just because you want it doesn't mean it will happen.

It's my birthday wish for this year. Placing her hands on her hips, Aditi glares at Zhuri. I'll ask the moon for it.

Though Zhuri does not believe in wishes coming true, she knows the basic rules. You know birthday wishes don't come true if you say it out loud.

    Yes they do.

No, they don't, Zhuri whispers, mocking her.

A grin appears on Aditi's pouty lips. I know what this is. You are scared it will happen, that's why you are in denial.

This has to be a joke. There's no way a twenty-year-old girl believes in these things, but it is Aditi's birthday, so Zhuri can let her win this argument. She gestures at the open window behind. Go on.

Outside the rays of the sun have kissed their goodbyes, letting the skies at the mercy of the approaching night. A faint, silver line of moon hangs in front of the window.

Odd. Zhuri tilts her head. They have been living in this room for two years but never before has the moon greeted their window.

She jumps from the bed onto the floor and steps towards it. Looks like the moon has arrived to grant you your wish.

She chuckles and faces Aditi, stepping down the bed.

Aditi's jaw drops as she darts next to Zhuri. Sweet, she says with a grin. You see, even nature is by my side. Raising her brows, she faces Zhuri. The moon has arrived for me.

A grown adult talking like this. Zhuri slams her face but doesn't argue with her.  Okay, your highness, what's your command, she asks, bowing.

Joining her palms, Aditi speaks to the moon, I want you to put the most annoying person in this world, Zhuri, inside my favourite novels. Let's see how she can do things differently.

Novels. Zhuri stands straight. Not just one, many. You hate me that much.

Without looking at her, Aditi trudges towards her bed. Yes.

Zhuri can't believe her ears. Wow, that one hurt, Adi.

Getting back in her bed, Aditi grabs her book. Good. It should.

Her silly behaviour has been a good source of amusement ever since Zhuri was a young girl. She glances out of the window to talk to the moon just to mock Aditi—but it's gone.

Squinting, she pokes her head out of the window. There isn't a hint of cloudy ruffles in the sky, yet the moon is missing. This is weird, she mutters.

    What? Aditi asks from behind.

Zhuri turns back. Do you see the moon?

Aditi crawls at the edge of her bed and stares out. Her forehead wrinkles. Where did it go?

    I don't know.

Oh my god. Aditi jumps out of the bed and rushes towards Zhuri.

    What happened? Zhuri asks.

Ignoring her, Aditi stares at the empty sky. I don't really want her to enter any book, okay, moon god. It was just a joke.

Zhuri hits her arm playfully. Stop being silly.

Aditi's lips part as she points at the sky. You saw it. It was there, and now it's gone. What do you make of it?

Though it doesn't happen regularly, it can't be magic. Zhuri strides back to her bed. I'm sure there's an explanation for this.

Oh, really. Aditi pivots. What is the explanation?

It is stupid of her roommate to think she'll know everything. I'm not an astrophysicist, Adi, Zhuri says, and picks up her mobile from the bed, checking the time. Unlike Aditi, she has to make sure they don't get late. It's seven-thirty already. We should probably get ready. Everyone will be at the restaurant soon.

Aditi closes in on her. I just don't want anything bad happening to you.

Apart from being dumb, to think that something will happen because of her wish is really self-obsessed. Zhuri drops her head. I'll be fine. Your wish can't hurt me.

    Chapter 2

ZHURI AND ADITI ARRIVE in the hall. Everyone has been waiting for them for some time now. Zhuri has received over twenty calls on their way here, asking them why they are not on time. They don't really have a reason other than arguing over Aditi's books.

Of course that won't be a good excuse, so Zhuri lies about being stuck in the traffic. Regardless of being late, everything seems to be going according to the plan. They cut the cake
