Introduction
image-placeholderEvery human being, young and old, male or female, from any part of the world, has to deal with challenges in their life. We all also have to make choices and, in many cases, resist temptation. Sometimes we have to choose between an action pleasurable in the short-term and another more profitable in the long-term, or between actions that could hurt others but benefit us personally, or those which require sacrifice on our part but benefit society as a whole.
The most significant and best-remembered stories often involve choices like these, and these themes also show up in the great religions of the world, capturing universal truths as they do.
The Abrahamic religions are no exception. Both the Old and New Testaments are filled with examples of men and women who have had to choose between serving themselves or God, between sacrificing for the right thing or doing the wrong thing for short-term profit. This book is about one such important choice Jesus Christ made in the New Testament, and will examine the reasons He made that choice, the effects it had on the subsequent course of human history, and what would have happened if He had failed and made a different choice instead.
You may have heard of the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, but have you ever considered what would have happened if Christ had failed?
It was one of the greatest battles in the history of humanity and the planet Earth itself. The fate of Earth, and many worlds beyond it, hinged upon its outcome. Yet it was not fought with swords and shields, nor bullets and tanks. One side did not even take up arms. It was not a physical struggle. And most of all, absolutely no one except its participants witnessed its progress and ultimate outcome, even though all of history would have been radically different if the other side had won.
This famous spiritual duel is recounted in three of the gospels of the Bible and tells of Christ’s victory over the devil during a time of temptation by the latter. Much ink has been spilled throughout the years around this event, including the hypothetical question as to whether Christ could have actually given into temptation. While this topic has been broadly discussed, most scholars have omitted the hypothetical consequences as to what would have happened if Christ had failed against His adversary during this act of warfare. This book wishes to explore this lesser-traveled theological path, answering some pertinent questions that arise when considering this suppositional altered course of events.
For such a topic to be properly addressed, it becomes crucial to consider the persons involved in the event, the event itself, and all the possible outcomes that could have arisen, while looking at the actual outcome, and the implications thereof. For this reason, some time will be spent looking at the devil, considering his fall from grace and the extent of his power on earth. Next, the person Jesus Christ will be examined with respect to His nature, life, ministry, purpose, and relationship with the Father. It is of course pivotal to zoom in on the temptation itself, making sense of what actually transpired in the wilderness. This will be followed by three questions, namely whether Christ could have given to Satan’s temptations, what would have happened if He did, and what it means for us today that He did not.
Specifically, this book focuses on the Devil’s temptation of Jesus on the great mountain, Hermon. There, the forces of darkness offered Christ lordship over the entire world, but He made the right choice and stayed loyal to His Father, thus providing hope for salvation for all the rest of humanity on Earth—and, also the effect on the rest of the universe!
We will start at the bottom of things and gradually introduce the reader to all the theological and historical background he or she will need to truly understand the significance of Christ’s victory over temptation. First, as a useful review for readers with a background in theology or Biblical studies, we’ll go over how the Bible actually describes Christ’s temptation, quoting from the books of Mark, Matthew, and Luke. We’ll also go over its implications for the universe as a whole which many Christians may not be aware of. With the basics covered, the next chapters will explore the deeper background behind Christ’s temptation, explaining what He was doing on Earth in the first place, and then why Lucifer rebelled against God and wanted to turn Jesus against the forces of Light.
We will then describe Christ’s journey to Mount Hermon and preparation beforehand as well as why Satan chose that specific time as opposed to any other to attempt his subversion of the Savior. Also, we will explore the ramifications of Christ’s refusal to accept Satan’s offer, and how this allowed the forces of Light a chance to triumph over those of the Dark. The final chapter will then explore a frightening counterfactual: What if Christ had accepted Satan’s offer and gone over to the Darkness?
A number of questions and dilemmas will be visited as this topic is explored.
What was Jesus’s purpose in coming to Earth?
What was the devil’s goal in tempting the Son of Man?
What was the extent of the power that each party possessed?
Why did the devil choose the approach he did?
Is there significance in the method of the victory Jesus employed?
What were the consequences of Jesus’s victory?
What would have happened if the devil had successfully led the savior into his temptation?
What does all this have to do with the reader today?
Let's witness His journey.
image-placeholderThe Preparation
image-placeholderimage-placeholderWhen you see a successful person, you only see the tip of the iceberg. Their failures, hard work, long hours, and investment of effort, energy, and resources are often forgotten or overshadowed by their success. Spectacular achievement is always preceded by less spectacular preparation.
It is true in the world of sports – Champions do not become champions when they win the events, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it
. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.
