Chapter 1: Introduction to Breast Cancer
Definition And Overview of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the cells of the breast tissue. It occurs when normal, healthy cells in the breast undergo genetic mutations that cause them to grow and divide uncontrollably. This uncontrolled growth leads to tumor formation, which can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Breast cancer is predominantly found in women, but it can also occur in men, although it is much less common. It is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting millions of individuals each year. It can occur at any age, but the risk increases with age.
Overview of Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer can arise from different parts of the breast, including the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that produce milk). The most common type of breast cancer is invasive ductal carcinoma, which starts in the milk ducts and then invades the surrounding breast tissue. Other types of breast cancer include invasive lobular carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, and less common subtypes.
The development of breast cancer is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors. Certain inherited gene mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, significantly increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Hormonal factors, such as early menstruation, late menopause, and hormone replacement therapy, can also impact breast cancer risk.
Signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include:
A new lump or mass in the breast or underarm area
Breast pain or discomfort
Swelling or thickening of breast tissue
Changes in breast size or shape
Nipple changes, such as inversion, discharge, or scaling
Skin changes, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering
Lymph node enlargement in the armpit
However, it's important to note that not all individuals with breast cancer experience noticeable symptoms, especially in the early stages. This highlights the importance of regular breast self-examination, clinical breast examinations, and mammograms for early detection.
Breast cancer is typically diagnosed through a combination of imaging tests, such as mammography and ultrasound, and tissue sampling (biopsy) for microscopic examination. Once diagnosed, the specific type and stage of breast cancer are determined to guide treatment decisions.
Treatment options for breast cancer include surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The choice of treatment depends on several factors, including the stage of cancer, tumor characteristics, and individual preferences.
Breast cancer prognosis varies depending on the stage of the disease at diagnosis, the type of breast cancer, and individual factors. Early detection and treatment advances have significantly improved breast cancer patients' survival rates.
Breast cancer awareness, regular screenings, and adopting a healthy lifestyle are crucial for prevention, early detection, and better outcomes in breast cancer management. Ongoing research and advancements in personalized medicine hold promise for further improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment approaches for breast cancer in the future.
Types And Stages of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer encompasses various types and stages, each with its characteristics and implications for treatment and prognosis. Understanding the different types and stages is crucial for determining the appropriate approach to managing and treating breast cancer. Here are the commonly recognized types and stages of breast cancer:
Types of Breast Cancer:
a. Ductal Carcinoma: This is the most common type of breast cancer. It originates in the milk ducts of the breast and can be invasive (spreading to surrounding tissues) or non-invasive (confined to the ducts).
b. Lobular Carcinoma: Lobular carcinoma begins in the lobules, the glands responsible for milk production. It can also be invasive or non-invasive.
c. Inflammatory Breast Cancer: This aggressive and rare form of breast cancer accounts for a small percentage of cases. It causes the breast to appear red, swollen and inflamed.
d. Paget's Disease of the Breast: Paget's disease typically affects the nipple and areola. It causes scaling, crusting, or redness and is often associated with underlying ductal carcinoma.
e. Phyllodes Tumour: Phyllodes tumors are rare and usually benign, but in some cases, they can be malignant. They form in the connective tissues of the breast.
Stages of Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer staging is a system used to describe the extent and spread of cancer. The most commonly used staging system is the TNM system, which considers tumor size (T), lymph node involvement (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). Based on these factors, breast cancer is classified into stages from 0 to IV:
a. Stage 0: This is known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). It is non-invasive, meaning the cancerous cells are confined to the milk ducts and have not invaded surrounding tissue.
b. Stage I: At
