Introduction
Ireally wanted to title this book: People are Stupid, But God is Still Great,
but I figured it would go against the premise of this study, so I asked the Lord to shut my mouth—the anthem of my life.
In a world full of free speech, do you often find yourself bothered by what others say? When opinions differ, is your first instinct to react based on your emotions or to practice a pause and respond in the Holy Spirit? It can be so easy to get wrapped up in others’ words. People can say some of the rudest, most hurtful, painful, or stupid things. And then we want to set them straight or give our opinion because we know we’re right,
or we get defensive and stick up for our reputation.
This was a mountain God and I went around a lot together. Seriously, I feel like he told me to put my hiking shoes on for it because there were some rocky steps I had to climb to get over it. I had a reputation for just telling it like it is
Then I realized that meant I was judgmental and opinionated. My feelings got hurt a lot. I had high expectations of what others should do
- like when you hold a door open for someone, and they don’t say thank you
(Gasp!). How dare they be so rude! Or, when you text someone, and they leave you on read.
Here's the thing – when we put such high expectations on people, it turns our focus away from God and to our flesh and to what we think is best. After all, what we focus on becomes the center of our attention.. Moreover, when we allow other people’s words to rile us up, we can tend to forget the truth of God’s word, reacting based on our opinions instead of giving grace or trying to understand the full picture.
The enemy wants to keep us chained in offense because it brings strife, discontent, anger, and self-righteousness – all things that take our focus from God. He wants us to be in
