Prologue

By 2068 AD the Earth was home to over 30 billion inhabitants who shared limited resources of water, food and safe housing. The oceans had risen as the polar ice melted and many large cities such as London and New York, succumbed to the floods.

The air was polluted and the future of life on Earth became uncertain. This was when a guild of international scientists proposed a radical plan of building six huge spacecraft that could house thousands of people and send them out into space to planets similar to Earth. Using radical new Cribbs-Outram Black Matter hyperspace engines, they were able to journey huge distances, in relatively short periods of time.

This is the account of one of those huge space cities named New Endeavour, and its third year into a five-year journey to Proxima B in the Alpha Centauri constellation, as seen through the eyes of an eighteen-year-old teenage girl, Lara and her new companions.

Chapter One : Lara and Zane

Lara hurried along the long white corridors towards the new classroom. Today her class would be moving to a larger room with a laboratory attached, for they were now the seniors and in twenty-four months, they would graduate.

It seemed to her that the last two years aboard the New Endeavour had rushed by in a few weeks rather than two and a bit years. Where once, the spaceship had felt strange and rather forbidding, now it felt like home!

If only we weren’t so crowded in our little cabin! We need more space! she thought to herself. For now that her brother Robert was fifteen, he seemed to take up more than his fair share of the tiny family space.

She was tired of sharing a bunk near him and hearing his snoring below her own bed at night. Besides, his sneakers and socks stunk! How she wished for a cabin on her own and not to have to share a single bathroom with the Fletcher family in the next cabin! How luxurious her old home on Earth seemed now!

Then, she recalled the terrible floods that had forced her family to flee to the mountains outside of Sydney and take shelter with her beloved Nana. They had all squealed with excitement when they were informed that they had been accepted as colonists to travel to a distant Earth-like planet and find there, hopefully shelter and wide-open spaces.
