    Prologue

    By 2068 AD, the Earth was home to over 30 billion inhabitants who shared limited resources of water, food and safe housing. The oceans had risen as the polar ice melted and many large cities such as London and New York, succumbed to major floods.

    The air was polluted and the future of life on Earth became uncertain. This was when a guild of international scientists proposed a radical plan of building six huge spacecraft that could house thousands of people and send them out into space to planets similar to Earth. Using radical new Cribbs-Outram Dark Matter hyperspace engines, they were able to journey huge distances, in relatively short periods of time.

    This is the account of one of those huge space cities named New Endeavour. And its five-year journey to Proxima B in the Alpha Centauri constellation, as seen through the eyes of a fifteen-year-old teenage girl, Lara and her new companions.

    Chapter One : Lara

    Lara, a small, brown-haired girl with large eyes and a pretty elfin face sat at the screen in her family quarters and sighed. She had just spoken to her grandmother on the electronic screen and while, the wrinkled, old lady assured her ‘that she was fine, dear!’ Lara still felt guilty at leaving her cherished Nana behind.

    She knew that the space agency had insisted that no-one over fifty years of age was eligible for the long space journey and that Nana would never have had the skills or health to make the dangerous trip; but still, she just hated leaving her behind. There was almost a certainty that they would never see one another in person, again!

    Now, you must be strong, Lara, her grandmother told her
