Preface
In my opinion, a bride and groom deserve a whole day for their wedding, not just three or four hours but a day to focus on the excitement of what's about to happen in this new chapter of their lives.
People ask me what can go wrong at weddings, and I tell them that it's usually family issues. It was my hope and mission to give the bride and groom one day out of their lives without all the emotional baggage and drama that each family brings to the wedding day. I wanted them to be able to focus on their love for each other and nothing else, and that's what I hope you will come away with after reading this book.
Loyalty, love, respect, and honor were what we were given by the wedding angels who came to our rescue in our times of need in the middle of a wedding. We have been so blessed by every single person whom we have come in contact with over the years; these are just a few of our fond memories from those days.
Acknowledgments
First, I must thank my loving, God-given husband, Ronnie, who has always been there encouraging, supporting, and nurturing me and my dreams. I could never have done this without him. And to my beautiful children who missed out on time with me as I worked to make my dream come true; I so appreciate their love and encouragement even through their sacrifices. Luckily, they had a dad, Ronnie, whose nurturing spirit helped them to become the jewels that they are today. Five years ago, we passed the torch, selling the business to our daughters Amber and Shawna, who now truly understand the competing demands of parenthood and business. I'm so proud of all that they have accomplished at Butler's Courtyard.
None of this would have been possible without Janice's love and expertise, her technical skill, and constant prayer.
To the wedding professionals, the angels who became part of our family and business, thank you.
When God placed upon my spirit my need to write this book, I hastened to remind him that I'm very dyslexic, that I suffer from attention deficit disorder, and that writing was not a gift that he had given me. When I was reminded that through him I can do all things, I began to pray for someone to help me with this venture. I asked numerous writers whom I knew, but they all declined. Then one day, I asked a neighbor, Doris, an angel who has a background in teaching English, to help me with this book. When I approached her and explained what I was attempting to achieve, she listened, and after taking some time to think about it, she got back to me to say that it was not something she was ready to take on. Undiscouraged, I continued to pray that God would bring me the person that he wanted to help me with this work, someone who would be able to hear the emotion and love in the stories and who would be able to put it into my words.
Two years later, Doris approached me and said that she could not get my request off her mind, and she agreed to help me. Thank you, God! I am so grateful to Doris for the gift of this book. From the first stirrings of the idea to the publication of this book has been a thirteen-year process filled with hope and disappointment, highs and lows.
And finally, I appreciate all of the wonderful couples that God brought to us, the ones who needed us as much as we needed them. We have learned so much from all of you. We have been so blessed by every single person that we have come in contact with over the years. Thank you, all.
Introduction
Duct Tape, Ronnie, and God
Oh no! I can't believe this. We broke the zipper!
Few days come close to a bride's wedding day when it comes to emotion. Brides have such high hopes for their special day, spending months, years, and sometimes their entire lifetime planning and dreaming. The day is always full of emotion, ranging from tension to downright giddiness. One emotion I never want them to feel is panic—and for them not to feel it is my job, with an assist from the big guy, God.
So when bad things happen, my job is to turn them into good; I have to be the one who presents a calm front to soothe the bride and her entourage—I also have to be the one who fixes it. And I'm a pretty good fixer—but only with help from my wedding angels.
On this particular day, the bride and her attendants, having already enjoyed hours of fun in our Rose Cottage getting ready for the ceremony, realized too late that the dress of one of the bridesmaids was way too small. Not knowing what else to do, three of the girls worked to stuff the poor bridesmaid into her dress. I had just run into the room from my office, having been frantically called by one of the bridal party members, when I saw and heard the zipper break. What a frightening sound!
Now, these dresses were unusual. They were two-piece, with a sleeveless top and a long skirt, both in the same striking celadon green color. But the skirts had white stripes down the side, a feature which proved to be our saving grace.
Lord,
I prayed, I need your help! What am I going to do to fix this?
The thought came to me, What if I use jumbo-sized safety pins to join the sides of the zipper together and then cover the one-inch gap with wide white ribbon? I talked to my staff on wire
(through headsets that we all wear on event days), asking if there were some wide white ribbons in the house. My husband, Ronnie, overhearing the discussion, came to the
