The Ghostly Pen Pal - J.T. Harrow
Chapter 1:
A Mysterious Arrival
Emily was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary curiosity. She loved reading about adventures, solving puzzles, and dreaming of mysteries that needed solving.
Today was a Saturday, and Emily was hoping for a quiet day to read her newest detective novel. Little did she know that a real-life mystery was about to unfold right in her own home.
The First Letter
EMILY HAD JUST MADE herself a cozy reading nook on her bedroom window sill when she heard her mom call from downstairs, Em, could you come down? There's mail for you!
Mail? For me?
Emily thought. She was only ten; it wasn’t like she was getting credit card offers or coupons for lawn care. Curiosity piqued, she scampered down the stairs to see what it was.
Her mom handed her an envelope. It was a bit yellowed and looked very old, like it had journeyed through time to get to her. The handwriting on the front was unlike anything Emily had ever seen — looping and elegant, but also somehow ancient.
Who's it from?
her mom asked.
There's no return address,
Emily said, flipping the envelope to check the back. Can I open it?
Of course, sweetie.
She carefully peeled back the seal and unfolded a piece of parchment that smelled musty, like the pages of an old book. The handwriting inside matched the front — elegant, old-fashioned, and somehow...magical.
Dear Friend,
it began, I am in need of your help. You do not know me, and yet, I feel like you are the only one who can help me find the peace I've been longing for.
Emily's eyes widened. Mom, listen to this!
She read out the words, and her mom looked as perplexed as she felt.
That's a strange letter to get,
her mom said, scratching her head. Must be some kind of joke.
But Emily wasn't so sure.
Attic Secrets
A FEW HOURS LATER, Emily found herself unable to concentrate on her book. The letter had her mind buzzing with questions. Who could have sent it? And what did they mean by 'finding peace'?
I need to find out more,
she thought. Maybe I can find similar cases in detective books
.
Remembering old detective stories, Emily decided that the attic — a dusty, cobweb-filled room filled with family heirlooms — was the best place to start looking for clues. She climbed up the rickety wooden ladder, the dim light from the attic window casting shadows on forgotten boxes and antique furniture.
After some searching, Emily stumbled upon a box she had never noticed before. It was small and made of faded wood, engraved with the same kind of mysterious, ancient patterns that she had seen on the letter.
With bated breath, she opened the box. Inside was an old quill pen, an ink bottle, and another piece of the same musty parchment. This time, it was blank.
Could this be the type pen that wrote the letter?
Emily wondered, her heart pounding in her chest. She decided to take the box down to her room; it felt like a clue that needed solving.
Unexplained Chills
BACK IN HER ROOM, EMILY placed the box on her desk. Just then, a sudden breeze swept through her room, rustling the curtains and making the candles flicker. A shiver ran
