The Haunted Homework - J.T. Harrow

    Chapter 1:

    The Haunting Begins

The crisp autumn wind swirled through the streets of Pine Creek, scattering leaves and whispers of mystery. As children anticipated the arrival of Halloween, the Pine Creek Middle School seemed to absorb the festive energy, its old brick walls looking more haunting than ever.

But even in this season of ghouls and candy, nothing could prepare a group of friends for the eerie events that would unfold in Room 307 — Mr. Thompson’s math classroom. They would soon see their friendship and bravery being tested as they embarked on their new adventure.

    Meet the Squad

ZARA SAT AT HER DESK, tapping her pencil against the notebook filled with equations she barely understood. With her curly brown hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, and wearing her favorite Girl Power t-shirt, she was the unofficial leader of her tight-knit group of friends. She had a fierce love for mysteries and was always up for an adventure.

On the opposite side of the room sat Leo, who had been her closest friend ever since kindergarten. Leo was the group's resident nerd, as he was usually tinkering with some kind of technological gadget. He frequently became disoriented as he delved deeper into the world of programming as his glasses rested on the bridge of his nose. Both of Leo's parents worked in the field of software engineering before making the move from Silicon Valley to Pine Creek two years ago.

Completing the trio was Emily, who sat two rows behind Zara. Emily was the artist, her desk usually cluttered with sketchbooks and color pencils. She was quiet and observant, with striking blue eyes that seemed to capture everything around her. Her family had been in Pine Creek for generations, and local legend had it that her great-great-grandmother was a witch — though Emily always laughed off such stories.

What’s up, Zara? You look puzzled, Leo whispered, leaning forward.

It’s this math homework Mr. Thompson assigned, Zara replied. Something feels off about it. Plus, why would he assign homework two days before Halloween?

Leo glanced at the assignment. Well, Mr. Thompson always was a bit eccentric. Remember last year when he dressed up as Pythagoras for Halloween?

Zara chuckled, How can I forget? But still, there’s something weird here.

    Ghostly Greetings

THE BELL RANG, SIGNALING the end of the school day. Mr. Thompson handed out the homework
