About the Author
Chapter One
Monty scratched her chin and looked across the office. Another day, another dollar. She could see the circles around the employee's eyes and hear the excitement in their voices deteriorate as the day dragged on.
So, this is the crime scene?
Monty asked the dark-haired detective on her right.
This is it,
Yates replied, chewing a piece of gum like he hadn't eaten in days.
And may I ask why these employees are still in the building after a murder occurred?
She questioned with a raised eyebrow. Aren't we concerned for their safety and security as well?
You know the routine,
Yates replied. They are all suspects. We have to keep them here until the questioning is finished.
And they are supposed to be working while they wait?
Monty asked. Isn't there a concern that some vital piece of information might slip through the receiving end of one of those headsets?
It's a corporate job,
Yates said with a shrug. The big man still wants his piece of the pie too, and if they are here, the company figures they might as well be working.
The big man is the reason we are here in the first place,
Monty replied, looking down the hall at the manager's office. And after seeing the circumstances in which these people are working, I'm thinking that finding the killer might be harder than we think.
Maybe, it was all just a fluke,
Yates said.
A fluke?
Monty cried. How can a dead man in an office be a fluke?
No, I mean the intent,
Yates said, offering another shrug. The medical examiner thinks this looks like murder. Maybe, the man just died on his own. It seems like he had a stressful job.
There was bruising on his neck,
Monty stated. And he died right after giving a long list of write-ups. This looks intentional.
Yeah, but you never know,
Yates replied.
Cortez is the best medical examiner in the area,
Monty argued. She hasn't been wrong yet, so what makes you think she is now?
Everyone is wrong at some point,
Yates said. Hold on,
he stated, holding up a finger and reaching into his pocket. Someone's calling.
Monty watched as the man took a small phone out of his pocket and talked into the receiver.
Any new information?
