I offer my sincere gratitude to my friends and well-wishers who have encouraged me in writing this short novel. A special mention should be given to my son Saril’s many suggestions, particularly his suggestion to add the last chapter, which, in retrospect, rounded off the story more satisfactorily.
Foreword
I was motivated to write this short novel by the plight of African elephants in the last half a century or so. These magnificent gentle giants roamed the great savannas of Africa for millions of years; as they are herbivores they did not come into conflict with other animals, and because of their size, they remained safe for much of their existence. This state of affairs changed in the last century, with the availability of high-power guns, equipped with telescopes and by the demand for their tusk for making and marketing mementos, as well as for their purported medicinal use in the East Asian countries. Such demand was compounded by the ease with which the poachers were able to cut into and extract the tusks by using the circular saw. Thus, the fate of these gentle giants was impacted, leading to the steady decline of their numbers.
Various governments and organizations have taken steps to reverse the course of this disastrous state of affairs, with only a limited degree of success. Banning the manufacture and sale of mementos made from elephant tusks and confiscating and destroying the stockpiles of elephant tusks have barely made a dent in this tragedy. The reason for this failure is, of course, the continued demand for elephant tusks for medicinal purposes, and the high price they fetched in the underground market. So, what is the solution? I came to the conclusion that educating the masses will be an essential component of this effort, and with the publishing of this short novel, drawing the attention of the masses to the plight of the elephants, I can make a small contribution. This novel is designed to educate the children, although many adults may also need such education. In addition, some consistent efforts at discouraging the use of elephant tusks for medicinal purposes need to be done; here, the respective governments have seminal roles. Their consumers should be made aware of the fact that the tusks have no medicinal value, but also legislation to ban such use must be enacted. Another, humane measure that can be done is to capture the elephants, cut their tusks short so that they are not targets of the poachers, and thus save them from the poachers’ guns. This would be far more effective and productive than confiscating and destroying tusks after their owners have been butchered!

Chapter One
Mom! Broken tusk is bothering me,

He had his ears raised, the head shaking from side to side in fake distress and the tail raised.
He continued, He is throwing stones at me.
That was so typical of him! All I had done was sprinkle some dusty soil on him, just for fun. And that translates to stone-throwing! His mother is my aunt. She is the elder female in our group and thus
