To my loving, patient, and uncommonly supportive family: Edward and Essie Stamps, Lori Scroggins, Tami Stamps, and Gregory Charles Scroggins.

In addition, to two powerful intercessors: Mother Esther Hilbert and my grandmother Viola Richardson.

    Acknowledgments

I want to take this opportunity and give thanks to those who encouraged me, prayed for me, affirmed me, and yes challenged me to write this book.

I pray the blessing of the Lord rests upon your lives.

There were three powerful intercessors who impacted and imparted into my life in the arena of prayer: my mother Essie Stamps, my grandmother Viola Richardson, and Pastor Esther Hilbert.

My grandmother and Pastor Hilbert have transitioned on to be with the Lord and I never thanked them for the imprint that they made on my life. My mother is still on the battlefield, praying and interceding on a daily basis.

I’m going to share how these three powerful women helped me to form a prayer life and become conscious of the call to intercessory prayer.

    Pastor Esther Hilbert—Warrior Intercessor

Pastor Hilbert was a dynamic prayer warrior and intercessor. Later in this publication I will tell the differences between a prayer warrior and an intercessor.

Growing up in the church we had weekly night of service devoted to prayer.

I was in my teen years and one particular prayer service night I didn’t kneel to pray. I sat in the pew and observed Mother Hilbert as she prayed.

That night it was as if she prayed fire down from heaven! I had never seen anyone war in the Spirit as fervently as she did that night. She would raise her head and hands towards heaven; seemingly looking directly at the Throne of Grace. I knew something was happening in the heavens. Then those raised hands would begin to clap; each clap sounded as mighty thunder.

I could feel the sincerity, urgency, and seriousness of her heart. Something was imparted into me that night, a changed prospective on prayer. I desired the ability to pray to God as she did, so my prayer journey begun.

    Viola Richardson—Gracious Intercessor

My grandmother was a vitreous and gracious woman of God who believed in the power of prayer.

She possessed such strength yet her nature was meek. I remember her telling me, A soft answer turns away wrath. (Psalms 15:1) At that time I didn’t know that was a Bible scripture.

One Saturday my sisters and I went to visit her and take her a few things. She was there along with one of my aunts.

As we brought the boxes in the house and greeted her, a spirit of praise swept over her and she began to pray a prayer of thanksgiving.

The vibrato of her outpouring to God penetrated every inch of her house.

She poured out to God with every fiber of her being. I have never witnessed anything like that before or since.

That moment imprinted my prayer life.

    Essie Stamps—Compassionate Intercessor

To know my mother is to love my mother for she is full of love and compassion.

The imprint of prayer and compassion my mom has imparted to me cannot be defined to any one incident or moment in time. It is the lifestyle that she has lived before me each and every day.

She has been endowed with the spirit of wisdom, encouragement, and integrity.

There has been many who has called her for prayer and counsel; despite how she felt, she would listen and pray.

Her God-given compassion moves her into action not only in prayer but in service to others. She has fed, nurtured, provided shelter, and gave out of her own needs to help and serve others from the infants to the elderly.

I know that my mom is a gift from God to me and this world and I don’t mind sharing.

What a privilege I have had to be able to observe and learn from such great women of God.

    What Is Intercession Prayer?

Praying is the way that we communicate with God. It’s when man talks to God, and God talks back to man. Spending time communicating in the presence of God has many benefits besides getting an answer. For the Bible says in Acts 3:19b that the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. The Bible also says in Psalms 16:11, Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is the fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

One of the greatest benefits in communicating with God is that you will begin to build a relationship, grow a relationship, or strengthen your relationship with him.

Having a relationship with God is the main key to intercession praying.

In Webster’s New World Dictionary, one definition for the word intercedes is: to interfere in order to bring about an agreement.

This goes for intercession prayer: it’s a prayer of interference to bring about an agreement on the behalf of others.

Intercession is a more concentrated form of praying; meaning, you are targeting in on a specific prayer petition and pleading it to God.

Prayers of petition are requests. Requests must be made according to the will of God as revealed in His written Word. Supplication is another word for this type of prayer. The word supplication means beseeching God or strongly appealing to him in behalf of a need.

Through intercession the desired outcome is to effect moral directions and decisions, to bring peace in turbulent times, to heal from infirmary, and to abort
