    Chapter 1: Choosing your identity

    1.1. Parents' choices

The birth and childhood of Moses are marked by mystery and miracle. He was born in a context of persecution and danger, but he was saved by the providence of God. He grew up in a privileged and educated environment, but he discovered his origins and his vocation. He had to choose between two identities, two cultures, two callings.

The story of Moses begins in the book of Exodus, which recounts the exodus from Egypt of the Hebrews, God's chosen people.

The Hebrews are the descendants of Abraham, the father of believers, who received the promise of God to give him numerous posterity and a land to dwell in. The sons of Abraham are Isaac and Ishmael, the respective fathers of the Jews and the Arabs. Isaac's son is Jacob, who had twelve sons, the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel. One of Jacob's sons is Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but was raised to the rank of vizier in Egypt thanks to his gift of interpreting dreams. Joseph saved Egypt and his family from famine, and brought his brothers and father to Egypt, where they were welcomed by the pharaoh.

But times changed, and a new pharaoh took over, who didn't know Joseph or his story. He saw that the Hebrews had become very numerous and very powerful, and he was afraid that they would revolt against him. He therefore decided to reduce them to slavery, and to impose forced labor on them to build cities and monuments. He also ordered the Hebrew midwives to kill all the boys who were born, to prevent the growth of the people. But the midwives feared God more than Pharaoh, and they let the children live. Then the pharaoh gave this order to all his people: Every boy who is born will be thrown into the river; every girl will live.

It is in this dramatic context that Moses is born. He is from the tribe of Levi, the tribe of the priests. His parents are called Amram and Jochebed . They already have two children: Aaron and Myriam.

When they see that their son is handsome, they decide to hide him for three months, to protect him from the pharaoh's decree.

But they can't keep it a secret any longer, so they take a basket and coat it with bitumen and pitch to make it waterproof.

They put the child there, and they lay him among the reeds on the bank of the river. The baby's sister stands at a distance to see what will happen to her.

By a happy coincidence - or rather by divine intervention - the pharaoh's daughter comes to bathe in the river with her servants.

She sees the basket among the reeds, and she sends for it.

When she opens it, she sees the crying child. She takes
