    HOT ON THE TRAIL

    I COULD FEEL him staring at me on the trail. I was 18 miles into a 20-mile trail race when he caught up to me. I heard the sound of shoes crunching along the gravel on the flat path between the trees and turned over my shoulder to see who it was. There were only about 150 people running the race today, and most had finished already. From the sound of his stride, he must have started late. He was definitely faster than me.

    So I knew he was staring when he slowed to run slightly behind me for the final two miles. He had a completely shaved head and wore sunglasses, even in the shaded woods. He had a red tech shirt that clung to his lean muscles. In my brief glimpse over my shoulder, I definitely saw his defined shoulders and pecs as much as I noticed his thigh muscles in those tiny, black running shorts.

    I took a deep breath and dug in deep, kicking it up a bit to finish my final stretch strong. I loved this race because it began in the late afternoon, during the worst part of the day in the humid August heat, and finished at twilight with a barbecue in the park. Everyone hung out, drank beer, and ate burgers, talking shop about all the upcoming fall races. Trail runners were a tight crew, supportive and friendly.

    This guy, whoever he was, must be new in town. As I crossed the finish line, the volunteers all cheered me on and hugged me. Nice finish, Diana, said one, hanging my hardware around my
