Stone & Izzy - Jewel Adams
CHAPTER ONE
The air felt crisp and invigorating to Stone. He enjoyed being out at the farm and away from town. There are too many expectations in town. I feel free out here.
Stone tried not to remember what happened a couple of weeks back. He felt really good that Mother could save Father. They possessed a love for each other that he sensed was so strong that it couldn’t die. She did age.
She knew she would when she used time to save him, still she did it.
Stone shook his head. He didn’t understand that commitment. Maybe, yeah someday he might find that kind of love, He kicked at the dirt. I don’t know if I will love anyone that much.
Oh, he knew he had the ability his mother used inside of himself and much more. For now, he needed to get the farm in working order. His home, it will be.
He picked up the socket wrench and forced himself to concentrate on the baler engine. Stone looked over at the plow and smiled. At least I got that one running.
The planting would begin next month. He needed to get the equipment up and running. The biggest problem he found was the sprinkler system. He needed to make sure the pumps were working before he could determine if the sprinklers worked. Time moved too quickly for him. He huffed at himself over the thought.
When Roc’s guards showed up, he gave each of them a chore to get done. The sound of various hammering earned him a smile. At least the men were working on the repairs at the house and barn. He looked up at the one guard standing on top of the barn roof. Good place to guard from.
His senses did a sweep of the area and found nothing dangerous. He could feel the Bobcat in the woods. He already held a conversation with the animal and told him flat out he could stay, just don’t go after any of the animals on the farm. The cat agreed to stay clear of them.
He discovered after moving in here, one of his new abilities proved very useful. He could speak to the wild animals that roamed the farmlands and woods. So far it proved useful. He held no desire to kill any creature he didn’t have to.
Iron’s place needed more repairs than just the house and barns. Stone would go over tomorrow and gather the rocks and boulders from the grounds. They would make great fencing for Iron’s place. The fencing here would need to be higher to keep the deer and other grass eating animals out of the planted fields. He also decided to bury the fence down about a foot or more. It would help keep the rodents out of the fields as well.
They were going to plant various grazing grass at Iron’s place once the fields were cleared. We will make it work.
Iron’s would need to be planted first. They didn’t have any crops to rely on for feed. Iron wouldn’t need to get the animals for another month. The grass would grow by then and have a chance to get the roots down before the cows could graze on it.
Stone was undecided about getting the buffalo. He would need to get that area cleared once his crops were planted. They would be an interesting test.
Stone stopped in step. It is back.
His wolf wanted to come, but he stopped him. The faint melody seemed to surround him. It sounded beautiful. He wondered what was making the music.
He looked up at the guard. He doesn’t hear it.
Yesterday when it started, he noticed only he could hear the song. Stone thought he should be concerned, but it didn’t emanate any danger. No, all he felt was a calm peace listening to it.
Stone tried again to discover the area the song was coming from, but he couldn’t pinpoint a location.
He called the guard. I’m going over towards the lake. I need to check something.
The man moved to come off the roof. It is alright George. I’ll be right back, and I am sure you can watch me from up there.
Alright, sire. I will keep an eye on you.
Good. I won’t be long.
Stone started walking towards the lake. He shoved the wrench into his back pocket. The song seemed to get stronger the closer he came to the lake. He wanted to find out the source of the music. Yesterday he checked the woods nearby and found nothing. The lake might prove to be a better place.
He slowed his pace as he neared the slope down to the water, then he stopped before going down to the lake. It is louder here.
Stone stayed near the trees. The shadows would help hide his presence. Once again, he stopped walking. From where he stood, he had a clear view of the lake.
Something moved on the water. Stone crouched down and waited. There you are.
He watched as a graceful arm rose out of the water then reentered. Out for a swim, my illusive songster.
He could see her body moving under the water. Her legs looked long as she kicked out. Her blonde hair moved through the water blocking her body from his view, but he could sense her beauty. Elegant lady.
He wanted to rush down the hill but held back as she neared the shore. Stone pulled in his breath and held it as she rose out of the water and started walking to the shore.
Her naked body glittered as if she were covered with tiny diamonds. He’d never seen anything so beautiful. When she reached down to gather her clothing, he saw much more than he felt she would show if she realized she was being watched. My goodness.
Stone smiled over what he saw when she turned her back to him. Wings, a Fae.
He wondered what kind of Fae she might be. Her wings were tinted in gold surrounding a beautiful hue of soft yellow running through the wing folds. So beautiful.
Sire? Where are you, Sire?
George’s call snapped Stone’s head around. Cursing under his breath he looked back to the lake. Gone, of course she is.
He scanned the lake again but found no sign of her.
I am right here, George.
He tried not to sound irritated, so he didn’t peak the guard’s interest.
Are you alright, Sire?
Stone turned to face the man, knowing she now knew he had been watching her. Seeing her again would not be easy.
I am fine, George. Just taking measurements for the pipes.
Oh, yes, for the sprinklers.
Yes, which I need to get back to the repairs. Let’s head back.
Yes, sire.
George, please call me Stone.
The man hesitated and finally agreed to follow Stone’s instructions.
As they started back her image played out in his thoughts. Stone felt he could hear her song because he too possessed the Fae blood.
He couldn’t help but wonder where she could live out here. He doubted anyone in Wolenar knew of her existence. He thought to himself that she must be hiding out here. Stone would need to be more thorough with his search of the area.
CHAPTER TWO
H e saw me.
Izzy practically growled over the truth of it. She’d been so careful, how did it happen? What did I do wrong?
She knew where he came from. Izzy watched him move in to the old farm house. The big man must be someone of importance. Like the other one at the farm beside this farm, they both held guards in residence.
Izzy knew she took a chance staying in this area. Wolf country of all the places to hide out.
She made her way back to the cave she found. Her invisible ability stayed in place as she moved through the forest. She thought about the lake at the other farm, it is too exposed, and I know this one is better for me to recharge in.
The big man’s lake was spring fed and contained the minerals that her body craved, and her wings needed to charge their powers.
She also discovered the wolves kept the Underlings away. They’d been chasing her for too long, and she felt too weak to keep running. A great Woodland Fae you are, Izzy. You should be up in the trees healing them and caring for the vegetation and ground.
Her whole life felt as if all she did was run. She didn’t know of any Woodland Fae to contact. They are probably all dead like her family. Why? What do these creatures want?
The Underlings were nothing but creatures. Oh, they were Fae, but they were dirty, murdering Fae.
Izzy held back her tears as she entered the cave. She didn’t have time for self-pity. She erected the shield about the cave so no one would spot it. She looked around and felt good that her food greens were still stocked. She would need to replenish them from the forest tomorrow. She made a fire to heat up the broth, a handful of greens and the mushrooms she sliced into the pot would be a good dinner for her tonight.
She thought again about the man that watched her today. She watched him over the last couple of days and blushed over her thoughts about him. He was very handsome and carried a build most men would want. She saw how hard he worked and knew those muscles came from the use of his body and not a gym as she noticed the humans used. There was something about him that puzzled her. He held his wolf, but something stronger inside set him apart from the other men at the farm. She wasn’t sure what made her senses tingle over his presence, whatever he possessed was a part of him. Izzy sucked in her breath over the truth and wished she knew what made him special. Yes, he could protect himself from anything that threatened him, but it went deeper than strength. It went deeper than his wolf. His power came from what he held inside of himself.
Izzy stopped over what she just realized. He holds a part of himself inside, but it is more like he is protecting a part of himself. Could he be Fae? It would answer why he affects my senses so much. Yes, another Fae’s essence would reach out and touch me. Izzy, his being would instinctively rush through me. He is protecting that special part of himself, just as I do.
She stood and walked around the fire pit. It could be the answer.
She shimmered inside over what the truth could be. It certainly would explain why my awareness of you is so strong whenever you are near.
She kept pacing and thinking. A smile captured her. You, big man, you are Fae.
STONE ROLLED HIS HEAD about his shoulders. After yesterday, he couldn’t concentrate on the engine. He wanted to go out and search for her.
He silently scowled at George. Having a guard was bad enough. The fact he didn’t want anyone to know about the Fae in his forest made him angry enough to order them all to go.
Stone threw down the wrench. That’s it. George, I am going to take a walk and I don’t want you to follow me. I have things to think over and a great need to have some space.
He started walking and looked back at the stunned man. I won’t be long, stay here. If I run into trouble, I will call you.
Stone turned away and hoped the man would listen. He headed for the forest that the lake sat in the middle of. He had a feeling she knew these woods better than he did. Once in the cover of the trees he stopped and listened. Yes, there it is, she is singing her song.
He followed the melody through the trees. One time he took a wrong turn, and the song began to fade. She sounded happy. Stone slowed his steps and then stopped altogether. He could hear her all around him.
His gaze and senses scanned the area, but he failed to locate her. Yet she sounded as if she were right beside him. Stone closed his eyes and listened. Ever so slowly, his head tipped back, and he looked up. There, at the top of a large spruce she hovered in the air. He watched her, it appeared she was tending to the tree. He looked around the base of the tree and saw the crushed beetles she was pulling from the tree and discarding.
As he listened, he could hear her talking to the tree and darned if the tree wasn’t speaking back to her.
There you go that should be better. I will check back in a couple of days to be sure I got them all.
Yes, best to check. They are very annoying, their bite is sharp and makes my sap flow. Thank you, Izzy.
You are welcome, Sam. Ask around and see if anyone else needs to be tended.
I will, we do appreciate your work, Izzy.
I enjoy helping out. I need to go see the maple, I noticed a limb hanging. I might be able to save it.
I do hope so, Izzy.
See you later, Sam.
Stone didn’t move hoping she wouldn’t see him. He watched as she took flight further into the woods. He
