    Chapter 1

    The routine is simple . I open the store at noon. Jared comes in an hour later. He picks out a book and sits in the armchair near the window. I offer him something to eat or drink during my lunch hour, but he declines. Katie comes by in the evening and talks about her day. When Jared leaves, she dissects every gesture he made (which isn’t a lot), insisting he’s attracted to me.

    I’ve heard wolves can get attached quickly. It’s sweet, she says with a faraway look. I can’t help but smile every time she does that. Katie loves romance and firmly believes in interspecies relationships.

    I believe in it too along with equality for all species – humans, wolves, vamps, fairies, wizards, etc. But, for whatever reason, wolves have been deemed inferior by everyone. Katie and I have theorized it’s because everyone’s secretly afraid of what they represent: animal passion.

    If he was interested, wouldn’t he have talked to me by now? Maybe he just likes to read, I say as I flip over the sign on the door so that it reads Closed. Katie shakes her head and steals my last cookie from my single serve pack.

    Want to bet on it? she asks in between bites with a twinkle in her eye. If I say no, she’ll know I’m attracted to him and will eventually convince me to flirt, which I’m terrible at.

    Fine, but I doubt he remembers my name, I say, heading over to a shelf where a book has been stuffed in the wrong place. Katie squeals and squirms excitedly before assuming a conspiratorial expression.
