About the Book
Ben and Me takes place on the Western plains of Texas, chronicling a young man named Mark Collins and his encounters with a ranch foreman named Ben. Little did Mark know at the time that a tragedy which had occurred years ago in Mark’s life had also involved Ben. Through the passage of time though, Ben and Mark form a deep relationship. Ben and Me reflects on the love Mark has for Ben and the things he was taught.
About the Author
Mike Upchurch is a former Pastor and a retired motorsports chaplain. After a successful racing and announcing career, he now works in North Mississippi as a Facilities Manager. He also continues to minister when given the opportunity. His fiancé is a schoolteacher and offers her professional critique to all his projects, including a published children’s book and several short stories.

Chapter One
Thinking that I’d rather take a beating than go inside there, I had eased into Davidson’s Funeral Home parking lot about an hour ago and just sat there in my truck with the air on for a minute. Allie couldn’t get away from the office, Mom was coming later, so it was just me by myself. As I sat there, I looked down at my phone and saw the time and wondered if Ben would be coming into town for lunch that day, then caught myself as I realized how stupid a thought that was. My mind was filled with memories about Ben, and really, I didn’t know what my reaction was going to be when I saw him in the casket. I had been to plenty of funerals, but this was somehow different. He wasn’t even family, but honestly, he was closer to me than most of my family. Finally, deciding I couldn’t put it off anymore, I climbed out of the truck and went in.
I saw a few folks I knew as I came in and nodded to them as I took off my hat. I found the room where they had put Ben and said hi to Ashley Biederman, who was standing outside in the hallway next to the doorway talking to some other ladies. Then I walked in as quietly as I could over to his casket. I’ll tell you, I sure hated being there. Everyone was talking low and being all hush-hush, and it just gave me the creeps. I had stood there for a minute, looking at Ben lying there, and thought to myself how that really wasn’t the man I knew. That man was a real cowboy; a man’s man. I didn’t know who this was in a blue suit and tie (Ben would have called
