A Much Awaited Patient

Ben was alone and sleeping on his bed in the middle of the night when suddenly he heard loud knocks on his door. He rubbed his eyes and pushed his head slightly up to look at the door.

What? He asked. Was this an earthquake or did he just fart himself awake, again?

My water broke! His sister, Bonnie responded. He snapped out of his sleep at once and reached for the lights. He turned it on and noticed that it was one in the morning. He got up and took his car keys along with his jacket and didn’t bother to wear socks for shoes. Hurry! she said from the other side of the door.

Just a second, Queen Kong, he muttered and opened the door. I was getting ready to take you to the hospital.

Have you called her?

I’ll call her by the time you get to the car, he said and reached for his jacket pocket where he last put his phone. He found it and began dialing to his wife who was a nurse at the nearest hospital.

The reason Bonnie was even living in his house for the past two weeks was because of his wife Emily who had been taking care of her. She was supposed to be here but got stuck at the hospital due to some emergency thing.

It always takes her time and whenever she managed to squeeze some time out of her work schedule, she had to spent it on bonnie. He dialed her number and called. Hey honey, Listen I’ve got some news.

Her water broke, didn’t it? Emily said from the other line.

How’d you guess?

Why else would you call me at one in the middle of the night? I guessed it was either this or that yet another owl entered our room and you mistook for a ghost again.

Hey, that owl went under a sheet and was flying while hitting itself on the wall and making scary noises. Any sane person would’ve thought it was a ghost.

Damn it! Stop your stupid ghost argument and ask if she can get things prepared for me there hippie, Bonnie said opening the door to his car.

I’m on it hippo. Just sit down and I’ll talk to her, he said and walked across the other side of the car. Can you arrange things there for Bonnie’s delivery?

It’s a hospital, she responded.

It’s a yes, she sighed.

Good, I’ll bring her to you, Ben said and started the engine to his car. Put on your seat belts, if they fit, he said and began driving in a steady slow speed.

How far are we?

10 minutes max. Don’t worry. Ben drove as carefully as he could and finally reached the hospital. I’m gonna call her to know we’re here, he said and reached for his phone. Before he could make his call however, he got a call himself and it was by her wife. Hey Emily, we’re here.

I know, she said and waved at him from a distance. Let’s go, I’ve managed to get a whole room for her, she said once she got closer.

Thank you, he said and parked his car before helping his sister to get to her room and hopefully stay there comfortably. Bonnie was brought to her room and lied down on the bed as Emily left to call in the doctor. She came back with the doctor and he gave bonnie some medicines which put her to sleep.

She’s gonna be alright, the doctor reassured him. She’ll just need to stay here for a couple of days, that’s all.

That’s not a problem, Ben said looking at his wife and thinking when he will be getting a child. Emily was always busy at work and now she was probably going to get even busier as she took care of her sister in law. They hadn’t been able to spend any time with each other longer than a few minutes. She was consistently busy with the patients in the hospital and the one in her own house.

They hadn’t have sex for more than three weeks and it looked as if it was not going to be that way for at least a month. Bonnie stayed at the hospital for two days before waking up and panicking to call the doctor.

Emily and Ben had just fallen asleep after a discussion about sex. Her period had just ended which meant tomorrow was decided. Then they received a phone call that Bonnie was going to give birth and Emily was needed at the spot.

I guess we’ve got to postpone it yet another day, Emily said.

Somehow I’m not surprised, Ben commented. It all feels like a bloody conspiracy that the illuminati are making to stop me from doing you. And my sister may or may not be a part of this scheme.
