    Introduction

I’m fascinated by the idea of unwavering faith. The faith developed through running with endurance. Endurance is necessary for every aspect of life, even if you’re not a believer. It’s endurance that gets you through the different stages of life.

Just think about it: if a baby gave up the first time they tried to crawl, would they ever learn how to do it? How about a child who’s learning to walk or talk? Or do anything to become independent of their parents? Without endurance, what would life look like?

Endurance becomes even more critical in this walk of faith because the enemy attacks us from every side. He wants us to defect to his side where he convinces us things will be easier. But will they truly?

The Bible is full of stories, lessons, and anecdotes about people who endured. This is the legacy God has given His people: a reminder that others have gone before us. Not only that, He has laid out the path for us to follow.

But how do we get this brand of unwavering faith?

I like the idea of unwavering faith, even as I accept that our faith will go through periods of ebb and flow. Let me explain what I mean.

The Oxford Online Dictionary defines unwavering as steady or resolute. Both words convey a sense of faithfulness. That you can depend on it.

It’s not that I believe our faith will never waver, but that it will stand the test of time.

Elijah was one of the greatest prophets who ever lived, yet even his faith wavered. After he fearlessly faced down 450 of Baal’s prophets on Mount Carmel, he cowered in a cave after Queen Jezebel’s threat.

Elijah hadn’t lost his faith, but recent events had taken a toll on him and he was exhausted and a little run down.

If Elijah could have low moments in his faith journey, then it stands to reason we will, too. After all, the Bible is there as an example for us.

Still, Elijah’s life is a reminder we can have the type of faith that can accomplish miracles.

That’s what I mean when I talk about unwavering faith. This is the type of faith I want. And, since you’re reading this book, I think you want it too.

We want the faith to pursue Christ even when things are hard. Enough faith to cling to Him when, from all appearances, things look hopeless. The fascinating type of faith that’s found in Hebrews 11 and 12.

But how do we get faith like that? I think the answer’s found in Hebrews 12:1-2:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne (NLT).

I did an in-depth study of these two verses and I’d like to share what I learned about endurance with you. The type that will create the unwavering faith you and I long for.

Are you ready? Turn the page and let’s continue the adventure on the path toward enduring faith.

    Your friend on the journey,

    Aminata

    Know Who God Is

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses

Hebrews 12:1 starts out by referring to the great cloud of witnesses. But who were the witnesses? Why was their testimony so important? And what can we learn from them as we press toward unwavering faith?

Since we need to deconstruct what it means to have unwavering faith, let’s break this idea down into its most basic components.

    Who Were the Witnesses?

The Oxford Dictionary Online defines a witness as someone who has knowledge of (a development) from observation or experience. The writer of Hebrews refers to a cloud of witnesses, giving the impression that there are a lot of them. So let’s talk about this great cloud of witnesses and what we can learn from them.

The account of the witnesses begins in Hebrews 11, the Faith Hall of Fame—so called because it records people who had great faith from the beginning of time starting with Abel.

Listed among the heroes of faith are people such as Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Rahab, and Jochebed. You may be curious why these persons were listed in the great cloud of witnesses and what was so important about their faith.

    We’ll get to that,
