CORD Magic - Leslie Pratt
Introduction
There are so many reasons to use magic in our lives. Some may use it to help them improve certain aspects of their lives, others for luck, and hundreds of other different reasons, while some use it as part of their witchcraft.
Magical powers come in many forms, but one of the most prevalent is cord magic, which is present in many things we use daily. Cord magic is commonly called knot magic, with very good reason – when you carry out your rituals or cast your spells, you must tie knots. This guide is focused on cord magic and all the aspects of it you need to know, including the importance of fabric and colors, not to mention timing and everything else to get you started on a magical journey. In short, this guide’s primary purpose is to enlighten you about everything cord, and knot magic has to offer, and it should be seen and used as a practical guide that walks you through the process of knot magic and some important spells.
I’ll start by giving you an overview of what cord magic is and a history of the practice before we delve into the tools you need to practice it right. One myth I do hope to dispel with the guide is that magic shouldn’t be associated only with evil; in fact, very little magic has to do with evil, especially cord magic, and I hope you understand that by the end of the guide.
This is a unique guide because you will not only gain a great deal of important information when you read it, but you will also be able to follow my practical steps to walk you through cord magic spells. Because magic tends to be associated with the supernatural, few people have first-hand knowledge, let alone experience, of what goes in in the spiritual world. I’ve done a great deal of research to ensure that you get full value from this guide rather than relying on generic and sometimes incorrect information you can find on the internet.
While it is aimed primarily at beginners, this is also an excellent guide for old hands who want to brush up on their skills and knowledge. It is written in simple language with plenty of hands-on instructions that allow you to understand the basic concepts quickly and move on to more advanced topics as soon as you are ready.
If cord magic interests you, delve in and start learning all you need to know to start practicing cord magic anywhere, anytime you want to.
Chapter 1
What Is Cord Magic?
Witches have plenty of magical tools available, and perhaps the simplest yet one of the most important, and definitely the most overlooked, is the simple cord. Stop reading and think about something for a minute. How often do you use cords, in any shape or form, in your daily activities? And how often do you use them in a magical way, even if you don’t realize it? Do you think about their safety when you tie your kids’ shoelaces? Have you ever tied a ribbon around something as a reminder? Do you take care of choosing the right tie for that important meeting? Each of these examples, and any other you can think of, illustrates cord magic’s beauty and simplicity – there is nothing difficult about it, nor does it take much time to perform.
Cords are one of the most flexible tools available. They make effective poppets because we can wind them into virtually any shape we want and then put them back to how they should be. Cords can also be found in stringed instruments. Indeed, in the old days, bards would use stringed instruments in magic-laced performances. We have vocal cords in our throats, leading to word magic, and our hair can be braided. The word’ tress,’ which relates to hair, comes from a term that means ‘three-fold’ in French. Hair has long been used in magical practices; for example, locks of hair can be placed into pendants and presented to a person, ensuring their safety is locked in place.
A Brief History of Cord Magic
If you are interested in witchcraft, I’ve no doubt you’ve already heard of the name Gerald Gardner. In 1959, he wrote about a Cingulum or a Witch’s Cord. Depending on who you talk to, Witch’s Cords are 9 ft long or are based on the Witch’s body measurements. They are used to measure the practitioner’s rank and advancement in Witchcraft Traditions, and some writings say the cord may be kept by a teacher who destroys it in a ritual when the Witch leaves the coven or dies.
Cords are not just used in magical traditions, though. We also see them used for meditation and prayer, where they are used in some religions, such as Catholicism, with beads or knots tied for counting - as you work your way along the knots or beads, your state of prayer or meditation increases. The cord color also plays an important role, as you will see in a later chapter.
Cords have long been used in Buddhism, but these are special cords blessed by the Lama with a mantra for blessings and luck and with a puff of air. Before synthetic fabrics were produced, people would wear their cords until they fell off, usually because they had rotted through. Most of the time, these cords were presented to people or used for specific occasions, such as vow-taking, or given as gifts by teachers who proved influential in a person’s life.
Magic Uses for Cords and Knots
Cords and knots have many uses. You can braid cords using focused energy, bless them, and carry them as charms and amulets. You can also choose different colors depending on your desired symbolic value.
Cord magic makes sense for many goals, and one of the most popular uses is for protection spells. In these spells, the cords are woven together while you bind negative mystical or psychic energies. Once the spell is complete, you carry it whenever you need extra protection or a ‘shield.’ Alternatively, you can leave it somewhere where the vibes feel destructive or harmful.
Other uses for cord magic include the following:
Binding involves a cord wrapped around a specific object representing what you want to be bound. Sometimes, a poppet is used to symbolize a person, usually someone causing trouble, and the goal is to stop them from being so negative.
Cooperation is when a symbolic number of cords is braided together. Each cord must be the same length to assure full accord, and each should be named after the situation or person lacking cooperation. Your energy must be focused on harmony, with your ideas and skills blending together in the same way as the cords in the braid. This braid should be kept where it is most needed.
Goddess or god symbols are used in your sacred space to represent your chosen Divine element. They can be made from colored cords balled, knotted, braided, or bundled together. For example, some people choose to symbolize the protective presence of the Being by laying a cord around their circle, while others make something artistic out of several cords and place it on their altar.
Releasing and Joining, which is entwined with knot magic. Let’s say you are looking for a job. You would use two cords – one that represents you and one that represents the job you are after. Tie the cords securely together; should you gain that job but decide to leave it, simply untie the knots.
Love and Friendship are two very strong ties, and marriage vows sometimes talk about binding ties. If you take part in or observe a Pagan handfasting ceremony, you will see that special ribbons or cords are used to ‘bind’ two people together and are kept safe with other ritual mementos. Where friendship is concerned, two people may make macrame bracelets for one another – the cord color and pattern should represent how you feel about the person, and they should be exchanged at the same time – try to choose a date that means something to both of you.
Luck is another popular use of cord magic. There are a few ways you can make cords enchanted for luck. You could use colored beads tied onto a sturdy cord, reciting a relevant incantation for each one. For example, you would use a green bead for money, while a pink bead would bring you luck in your love life. This cord should be worn as often as possible to draw the right energy into your life.
Self-Improvement cord magic involves a cord wrapped around your wrist while you focus on an area of your life that needs some improvement. Whenever a situation arises that revolves around that area of your life, touch the cord and focus on your intent. You can also add verbal elements so that the energy in the cord is activated when you say a specific word. It doesn’t need to be anything complicated; simply touch the cord and say the word ‘on’ or ‘now.’
Weather Magic has long been a focus
