Introduction
Welcome to The Little Book of the Occult. Within these pages you’ll find an introduction to all things magickal. The occult refers to supernatural beliefs and practices that cannot be explained by science or religion. Occult magick offers the ability to see the future, communicate with spirits and beings beyond the material realm, and access knowledge outside of everyday human understanding.
Occult magick has a long history, stretching back to ancient times. Despite its colorful and often secretive past, occultism is thriving in the twenty-first century. You might have seen practicing witches on social media, heard about the power of manifestation from a friend, or read about the benefits of tarot for self-care.
Supernatural energy and magick are all around us, waiting for you to harness their power so you can achieve your dreams and desires. This book will guide you through the history and possibilities of the occult and introduce you to the most popular and potent forms of modern occult magick. It’s also full of practical advice on how to use occult magick for self-care, achieving your goals, and creating your best life. The tips, spells, and ideas you’ll find inside are all accessible and involve little or no cost to try out.
Why magick
and not magic
?
The extra k
was added by prominent occultist Aleister Crowley (see page 39) to differentiate occult magick from stage magic. He considered magick
to be anything that moves a person closer to fulfilling their destiny and favored a six-letter word over a five-letter one as he believed six to be a more potent number.
Practicing magick safely
Casting spells and using magick can be powerful, so it’s important to treat these practices with respect and use your abilities wisely. Whatever energy you send out into the universe will come back to you threefold, so keep your intentions positive and do not set out to harm others.
Stick to these rules for safe occult magick:
Respect the free will of others
Keep your intentions positive
Get permission before using magick on or with another person
Protect nature and the Earth
Practice fire safety
Take care of your body
Chapter One
What is Occult Magick?
Occult magick is a combination of mental, mystical, and spiritual practices. Evolved through a long and rich tradition of esoteric and supernatural beliefs, the occult has long been associated with communing with ghosts and demons. While the supernatural still plays a big part, modern-day occultism focuses on connecting with our intuition, nature, and the universe for the purposes of self-care and self-discovery.
Supernatural
adjective
Anything that is attributed to a force beyond scientific understanding and/or the laws of nature.
Occult magick defined
Occult magick is the study, knowledge, and practice of supernatural forces. The word occult
comes from the Latin occulere, which means to hide or conceal,
and it refers to the hidden nature of supernatural forces, as well as the secretive way occultism has been practiced through the ages.
This secretiveness was due to fear of religious persecution and to guard against occult power falling into the hands of those who would use it to dominate or harm others.
Today, the need to keep occult knowledge concealed
