    Cord Magic: The Basics

Magic is everywhere; you just need to keep your senses open and receptive. Witches have been using many unexpected tools to perform magic throughout the ages. Many of these tools are looked over by laymen and even witches. A cord is one such tool. It is a deceptively simple tool, yet it holds immense magical powers.

We use cords in our day-to-day lives. Many of us do not look at it from a magical point of view, but remember, there is magic everywhere and in everything you do. When a person ties their shoelace, they do so by thinking of safety. Many people tie ribbons around their fingers to remember things. When you have important meetings, you wear specialties that make you feel more powerful and professional. All these are forms of cord magic.

Cord magic is simple and does not consume a lot of time. It is a flexible magical tool, and you can make it into many different shapes and release it to let it return to its original form. It is present in many different things that we use daily. For instance, stringed musical instruments have cords that are used to produce music. These cords can also be used to create magic. Bards in medieval times would use their instruments to channel magical energy. Vocal cords, too, are a form of cord that can be used to create words and cord magic. Hair braiding is another form of magic associated with cord magic. Hair has been used in restorative magic for thousands of years. Witches would often put a lock of hair inside a pendant that could be used to protect or secure a person.

    The History of Cord Magic

Cord magic is also known as knot magic as it involves knotting, braiding, or tying knots during rituals and spells. The history of cord magic is quite extensive. Knots have always been used for various purposes since ancient or even pre-ancient times. In 400 B.C., knots were used by historians to remember certain chronicles. Knots were also used to count days between festivals, count time for travel, and observe lunar rituals and days. The Hebrews used knots in their writing system and alphabet. In 1959, Gerald Gardner wrote about a Cingulum. A Cingulum is a cord used by witches, generally around nine inches long. It serves as a wand and is used in a variety of rituals. It also demarks the rank of the witch in the coven. According to certain legends, a teacher would destroy the Cingulum of a witch when they leave the coven or die. Some teachers may hold on to the Cingulum according to the tradition of the coven.

Sailors would often use knot magic to change the weather around them. Knots were untied to make the wind strong while tied tightly to calm the winds. Sailors generally used three types of knots. Untied knots were used to bring gentle winds. Tighter knots were used to bring stronger wind. And the third form of knots was used to bring a full-blown hurricane. Many communities continue to use these spells even now. The person is supposed to walk to a high point and chant a spell while tying knots. Once the spell is done and the knot tied, the person must blow on the knot and repeat for each knot according to its number. For instance, once on the first knot, twice on the second, thrice on the third, etc.

According to legends, Alexander the Great released the power of the royalty in the knot held by the descendants of Gordias. He sliced the knot in half and released the energy. The Knot of Heracles, or the square knot, is used to help wounds quickly as it contains immense healing powers.

Knots were also frequently mentioned in fairy tales and children's stories. For instance, a tale called The Drummer features knots significantly. The tale's protagonist goes on an adventure, untying knots from a cord one at a time. This act helps him throughout his journey.

The ancient Druids would wear knots of various colors around their waist. They were their special feature. The number of knots also denoted their rank within the community. A knot called Knot of Isis, shaped like an Ankh, is supposed to represent the uterus. It is generally seen together with an amulet and is sewn into priests' garments. This knot was also sewn into the wrappings of the dead.

According to the manuscript called Paenitentiale Theodori, a 7th-century Archbishop of Canterbury called Theodore used knots. A penitential was a compilation of a person's offenses against the Church and God. In such texts, people could find a list of offenses and specific wrongdoings and sins and methods to absolve the sins. An entry in this text forbids priests and common people from indulging in 'phylacteries,' which were supposed to affect the soul negatively. Phylacteries refer to amulets infused with sacred texts or spells that were put into small pouches, which were then worn around the neck. This method was used by Pagans to hide their symbols and magical prayers and was knotted extensively. Knots were considered one of the best places to hide a charm.

The power of cord magic is present in the symbolic nature of the knots. Many spell books feature anecdotes in which knots were used to bind spirits or diseases, and when they were loosened, it could bring forth a change in the weather. Knots were and still are used by people of different cultures who do not partake in witchcraft. Knots and cords are used for prayers and meditation. The Catholics use cords for counting to see the intensity of meditation or prayer. The color of the cord plays a significant role in the ultimate purpose of the cord.

In Buddhist practices, cords of different colors hold different significance. Buddhist teachers or lamas can bless cords through a mantra or puff of air. Before synthetic fabrics were discovered, Buddhists would wear cords around their necks, which would allow them to disintegrate over time. Certain cords were worn on special occasions only, such as vow taking. Certain cords were given as gifts to teachers and by teachers to commemorate certain occasions.

    Uses of Cord Magic

The easiest way to explain cord magic is that the practitioner ties knots in cords made of various materials. It is believed that a knot signifies the life situations of the practitioners and the individuals. Knot spells can be as simple as binding or joining spells temporarily or can also last a lifetime. A spell needs to be prepared in advance before you can perform cord magic. The practitioner can then untie knots over nine days, one by one, to release the trapped energy. Generally, a piece of string is used to cast knot spells. You may use threads, yarn, ribbons, twine, or any other material that can be knotted. Some practitioners prefer to keep a stash of strings for spells, but you can use any material you can lay your hands on. It is always recommended to cleanse and purify the material
