Foreword
A Perfect Mess by Dr. Samuel Kojoglanian deals with the most important issue concerning today’s public health crisis. It’s the issue of shame and condemnation. For nearly thirty years, I’ve worked with people going through drug and alcohol rehabilitation at a place I started called the Dream Center. One thing I’ve realized is by far the greatest obstacle in turning the corner of recovery and sobriety is the idea of Why bother?
I first met Dr. Samuel when he spoke at our church. It was such an amazing experience because I was expecting a methodical, tame, type of personality to lay out boring information on mental health. The opposite occurred. Dr. Sam practically ran to the stage with the vigor and the readiness of a fighter entering a ring. We laughed, we cried, and left the building feeling completely free of the slavery of shame. My entire life I’ve dealt with people who feel like it’s even hopeless to try because they’ve been buried so deep in the trash heap of burdens and regret. The fact that a doctor spoke on this issue was the secret I knew all along but hearing a top-tier cardiologist address this topic validated everything I’ve seen over the last thirty years.
This doctor is a champion of the people, a friend to the forgotten, and a leading voice not only in medicine but the internal medicine of the soul. It’s important to read this book hearing it from the voice of an experienced doctor, but more than that, your personal best friend and cheerleader. This book is going to shock you back to life. I can’t wait for the same revelation that came to life in me burst forth in you while reading this book of freedom. Get ready for a life of great joy beyond shame.

Introduction
A few of my patients suffer from cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle is weak, leading to congestive heart failure. A fraction of them will require an automatic defibrillator, a pacemaker with the ability to shock deadly rhythms of the heart back into a normal rhythm.
In A Perfect Mess we meet Jim, a patient with cardiomyopathy, who will be shocked by an unexpected event; a condemned lady ready to bury herself in shame who will face an unexpected judge; and the Christ follower, buried in condemnation who will be granted an unexpected pardon. All three will need a jolt, a defibrillator of sorts, to change course and get back on track.
If we allow and place our pride aside, course corrections can serve as jolts in our lives. Just like airplanes flying from coast to coast, course corrections are crucial to navigate our daily lives walking in God’s path and ultimately arriving at our eternal home. Once we accept God’s truth has the power to penetrate the chambers of our hearts, we will reject the ugly barrage of condemnation, guilt, and shame that plague us daily and allow our Father’s word and goodness to overcome our royal mess-ups.
Get ready to be shocked out of your mess!

A mess
is something we try to hide and avoid, but some things are not easily disguised. Past faults, hurts, and memories inevitably become evident in speech, action, dreams, relationships, and life. Sweep it under the rug if you will, but messes usually manifest as insecurities, anger, resentment, bitterness, hatred, envy, revenge, erratic behavior, self-condemnation, and even self-harm.
A blunder usually leads to a mess, and a mess often leads to condemnation. The word condemnation
has a daunting connotation and can be used as an expression of strong disapproval, criticizing as blameworthy, scolding and shaming, pronouncing guilty, sentencing punishment for an offense, judging to be unfit for use or consumption, and labeling someone to be unacceptable, wrong, worthless, or evil.
In this book, we will delve into the Gospel of John to meet a lady caught in adultery and condemned to die. Six months before His crucifixion, while visiting Jerusalem, Jesus was seemingly trapped by the brightest minds of His day as they labored to snare Him in this lady’s perfect mess, condemn Him, and kill Him. We will discover how Jesus managed a messy crisis, how He saved a messed-up soul, and how He will help us reroute
amid our pathetic blunders.
Closer to home, a few of my patients seem to get into their
