To anyone who is willing to fight for their life, but will also keep their values and dignity.
I will be glad to have you on my teem during the Zombie Apocalypse.
Chapter 1
(Sydney)
This will be such a fun trip. I’m so excited to be on my way to the Philadelphia Music Festival, seeing some of my favorite Artists perform live; Golden Touch, Deadly Flesh, One-Way Street, Jimmy Smith, and Janet Baker. Also, what’s making this trip so awesome is that I’m making it with the three greatest people in my life. My older cousin Sean, my best friend Jen, and her little brother, Ryan, who’s the same age as me.
Sydney, which band are you most excited to be seeing?
Ryan asks me from the back seat.
One Way St., definitely, they have so many great songs, and I really love their new single ‘Just Get out Of My Life’.
And their lead singer is so cute... and single,
Jen says, from the seat next to Ryan
Ryan laughs, and Sean smirks from the driver’s seat and says, oh please Jen, you know I’m above celebrity crushes.
That just causes all four of us to laugh hysterically.
After a few minutes of heavy laughter, Ryan can regain control of his emotions and says to Sean, I still can’t believe that you got your hands on these tickets.
It was about one week till the end of school, and Sean had entered a contest put on by the radio station, Awesome 102.5, and won four tickets to the festival. So the day after graduation, the four of us piled into his old Dodge Neon and were off. Ryan and Jen in the back, and me riding shotgun.
This is my first time making a trip like this, and I’m not sure if the four of us will ever be able to do something like this again. Soon, Sean will be off to college, Jen will start her senior year of high school in the fall, and Ryan and I will be freshmen.
With no more conversation, I lean back in my seat and close my eyes, ready to take a brief nap. It shouldn’t take us too long to drive from New York State to Philly and if all goes as planned we should arrive later tonight.
Not long after I fall asleep, I’m startled awake by Sean taking an unexpected turn off the highway and into a cornfield. With The woman’s voice from the GPS saying, Turn around when possible. Turn around when possible.
Jen and Ryan are yelling from the backseat, Sean, what the hell are you doing!
Chapter 2
(Sydney)
I rub my eyes, look out the window, and then rub my eyes again just to make sure I’m not seeing things. Sure enough, I was right. Sean drove off the highway and into a cornfield. You can even see where he knocked the fence down to get into the field. Now that I am fully aware of my surrounding I join in with the yelling, Sean, who taught you how to drive? Stay on the road, will you?
Sean never takes his eyes off the road (cornfield) and just calmly says to us, will you guys just relax, I’m doing what the GPS tells me to do.
Oh, my god Sean, I think to myself, you’re smarter than that. Maybe it’s time we switch drivers?
From the back seat, Ryan says, hey Sean, I’ll let you in on a little secret. When the lady says to make a turn, she does not mean to do it immediately. She does not want you to take down fences and start driving through a farmer’s cornfield.
I think we tired you, would you like me to take the wheel for a while?
Jen asks.
You can drive for a bit, but trust me, this is what the GPS told me to do,
Sean says stopping the car. He and Jen switch seats and in just a few minutes we’re back on the road.
Continue on straight ahead,
Says the GPS. So apparently the GPS is working fine. I’m still not sure what got into Sean, he must be exhausted. Doing what the GPS tells me to do,
like honestly? With Jen now at the wheel, we should be able to make it the rest of the way to Philadelphia smoothly.
Hey Sydney, would you be willing to make sure I’m doing exactly what the GPS tells me to do?
Jen asks me from the driver’s seat.
Yeah sure, I can do that,
I say.
Thank-you, because I really do not want to pull another Sean,
Jen says sarcastically.
Hey, Hey, I said I was sorry. I was doing what the machine told me to do,
Sean complains from the backseat.
Hay is for horses,
Ryan jokes.
Yeah, and like the GPS seriously told you to drive through a field, just get some sleep, I think you really need it,
I add.
Hey Sydney, you stay out of this, you don’t even drive, and yes it told me to do that.
Guys, stop it, now! Let’s everyone take a deep breath and clam down. We really don’t want an argument right now.
Jen says, trying to put an end to the tension that’s building up between us.
We stop the argument, or rather stopped it before it began. As a kind of way to calm all of us down and get our minds onto a more fun topic, I slide Janet Baker’s new CD into the car stereo. We go several more miles without a complaint; I knew this would work, just put in Janet Baker. It’s the greatest music to jam to, and when she’s on no one can stay upset with anyone for too long.
We’re halfway through the CD when the sun had nearly set and there’s a slight drizzle, but all of us are in a great mood singing along to Happy Breakups.
"It was such a happy breakup
I’m so happy now that the breakup is done
It was such a happy, such a happy breakup..."
When Jen says abruptly, causing all the singing to stop, guys we have a problem.
What do you mean there’s a problem with the car? There shouldn’t be, I got it all checked out before the trip.
Sean says in a bit of a panic.
Define problem?
Ryan says calmly, but with a hint of seriousness in his voice.
Instead of answering the question, Jen only squirms in her seat.
Ryan continues to pry, what would it be on a scale from one to ten.
Jen stops her squirming and whispers, probably a nine
Oh that high, okay, so what’s the problem?
Ryan asks again, this time more worried than before.
Jen still doesn’t answer and I look around the dash to see if I can find it out for myself, and I see it. The GPS has
