Xander My Pop Star - Mandy Bee

    One

U m hello….? Someone hollers from the back door of the church.

Crap, we’re almost finished cleaning up. I slowly walk to the back, hoping whoever it is has already left since they didn’t get a reply. It’s been a long day for me. The annual hotdog and BBQ sale makes good money every year but it’s murder to work. Some people are so rude you just want to hit them, but it’s probably not a good idea to hit them while they are buying food from a church.

When I make it to the backdoor, I see a broad figure filling the doorway. If this man was any taller he’d be hitting his head on the door frame. When his eyes meet mine, they stop me dead in my tracks. What in the world is he doing here? How is this possible?

His deep sapphire blue eyes rake over my body before he flashes me a smile and I can’t stop myself from smiling back at him. Smacking myself mentally, I straighten my shoulders, and erase all emotions from my face. There has to be a reason the biggest pop star in the world, Xander Kelly, is standing at the backdoor of my parent’s church, in the small town of Hinton West Virginia.

Yes, can I help you? I ask him tentatively. My voice soft, but I did manage to not sound as confused as I felt.

While most girls from ages of five to eighty are in love with Xander, I’m not. He just turned twenty-two not long ago, which makes him only three years older than me. However, this just makes everything you see about him online that much worse. He should know better by now that you can’t act like a spoiled brat all the time. Just last week it was all over the internet that he was caught storming out of a five-star restaurant in Miami because the chef wouldn’t make him tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Who does that?

Hi, I just got a blow out, and saw the sign for food. Are you guys still open? He asks, bringing me out of my thoughts.

While I’m tempted to turn him away, I don’t. Yeah, we’re cleaning up but come on in. I answer him passively, turning to walk back towards the fellowship hall of the church.

I’m Xander by the way. He introduces himself like I wouldn’t know who the hell he is. Yes, Mr. Megastar even us little people know who you are.

I know who you are. I can’t contain my eye roll but I’m walking in front of him so I know he can’t see me, not that I’d care if he did. All we have left are hotdogs. I tell him as we enter the fellowship hall.

Sounds good, I’ll take three with mustard, please. He says coming around me, but I turn before he can step in front of me and make my way toward the huge kitchen that is connected to the fellowship hall. There’s a small window connecting the two rooms, just like at a restaurant.

Kate, can I get three hotdogs with mustard please? I dip my head to ask her through the small window.

At this point of the day it’s just me and Kate working, she’s the pastor’s wife. I don’t think she would know who Xander is, however her grandkids would be having a fit if they were here.

You hate mustard Nia. She answers me as she grabs three buns from the steamer.

It’s not for me, we have one last walk in. I smile as I turn around. Kate is one of the sweetest women I know. She’d give you the shirt off her back but never mistake her kindness for weakness. She can be hell on wheels when she needs to be.

Ok, be ready in a minute.

    Thanks.

Do you want a drink? I turn, calling over to Xander.

Sure, what do you have? He walks over to me, invading my space giving me the urge to step back, but oddly, I don’t.

Coke, Sprite, and Water. I answer him.

Water’s fine. So, your name is Nia?

Yes. I answer him, but I can’t force my eyes to meet his. I wonder if he is waiting for me to freak out or fan girl over him. Maybe he thinks no one is a small town like this would even know who he was.

I hand him a bottle of water from the only ice cooler we had left. We usually start
